Learn new words. Reading without learning new words won't help you. IMHO

And one more thing: building your vocabulary and reading skills really takes time. It is a gradual process and no intensive preparation for the purposes of GMAT can substitute it.

I would caution against simply reading (especially fiction) to prep for the GMAT Verbal.

I've been an avid reader of fiction for most of my life and yet when I got into the nuts and bolts of the Verbal stuff I discovered all sorts of weird rules and grammar nuances that they typically do NOT teach you in school and are not necessarily present or obvious in written works.

I personally studied the rules and patterns that applied to the Verbal Qs. I found "things to look for" and "rules of thumb" and learned how to immediately eliminate certain phrasings. I learned what the GMAT was looking for in reading comprehension. A lot of the grammar rules don't even apply to our everyday manner of speaking or writing. I'm sure I've violated 6 rules already in typing this, yet you all can (hopefully) understand me.

For someone with English as a second language, it might be easier to deconstruct the wording rules and patterns. Simply reading will probably help you with reading comprehension (and for understanding the QUESTIONS as well). but do not bank on it.

As far as books to read to improve literacy... that's not my area of expertise so I'd suggest checking out the list that was posted above.

GMAT-related books... I only used one that I bought at my university bookstore but I forget the title. If I find it I'll let you know here in this thread.

I didn't take an official prep course, just used the book and many online resources.

To score well on GMAT, you have to be active reader.

Whether you read fiction book or magazines it does not matter. Reading will not only improve you RC, but also SC and complex CR arguments.

I m facing this issue and trying to read these days. I have bought Norman's Lewis " How to read better and faster". I will update you with my progress.

I've read a book on speed reading (I don't remember its title) and though its ideas are certainly useful, it will take you a lot of time and effort to apply and use them on daily basis. So I doubt that reading such books will help you considerably in GMAT.

improving your English.This will definitely help you.
