is x>3y

(1) x=0.7 + Y

if y=0.1 then x=0.8
3y=0.3------>x>3y-------->Yes

If y=5 then x=5.7
3y=15---------->x<3y------->No
insuff...

(2) 300000=20x/100----->x=1500000
141000=30y/100-------->y=470000

we have unique values of x&y---------->sufficient

Hi All,

We're asked if (in 1942) the number of people drafted to the army of Country X was GREATER than three times the number of people drafted to the army of Country Y. This is a YES/NO question and can be solved by focusing on the 'relationships' between the numbers involved.

1) In 1942, there were approximately 0.7 million more people drafted to the army of Country X then those drafted to the army of Country Y.

The information in Fact 1 does NOT define the 'scale' of the difference. For example:
IF....
Y=1 and X=700,001 then the answer to the question is YES
Y=1,000,000 and X=1,700,000 then the answer to the question is NO
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

2) In 1942, the 300,000 Adventist Christians made up 20 percent of the draft to the army of Country X, and the 141,000 Evangelists made up 30 percent of the draft to the army of Country Y.

The information in Fact 2 helps us to define the EXACT number of people drafted into each army:

X --> 300,000 = (.2)(Total of X)
1,500,000 = X

Y --> 141,000 = (.3)(Total of Y)
1,410,000/3 = Y
470,000 = Y

Thus, we CAN answer the question (and the answer happens to be YES).
Fact 2 is SUFFICIENT
