In my opinion answer is C. E changes the complete meaning, while C correctly uses "as these funds"

A. refugees in Kenya from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the World Food Programme appealed to numerous countries for funds amounting to \$10 million, as they (as they is ambiguous and wrong)

B. refugees in Kenya from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the World Food Programme appealed to numerous countries for funds amounting to \$10 million, as this sum ( IMO the correct one)

C. refugees in Kenya from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the World Food Programme appealed to numerous countries for funds amounting to a sum of \$10 million, as these funds (funds amounting to a sum of \$ 10 m sounds redundant and wordy)

D. refugees in Kenya from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the World Food Programme appealed to numerous countries for funds amounting to \$10 million, in order that these funds ( in order that these funds is not correct)

E. Kenyan refugees in Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the World Food Programme appealed to numerous countries for funds amounting to \$10 million, as these funds ( This is nonsense. Refugees in Kenya and not Kenyan refugees! )

Can someone comment if the usage in E "Kenyan refugees" is outright wrong or if Option E is wrong just because it changes the meaning of the original sentence?

Well, there's no such thing as an original sentence--the meaning in A can be wrong. However, when 4 answer choices all have the same meaning and there's nothing clearly wrong with that meaning, then that's what we want to go with. There's nothing *grammatically* wrong with the phrase in E.

Can somebody explain what is the reference of "them" in non-underlined part? Is it World Food Programme? Or is it 4 countries mentioned? Thanks!

B and C are the most tempting. But we really need \$10m to fulfill the program. Therefore we need the exact amount, not just the funds. So I choose B

i will also go with B

A and E are straight rejects
\$ 10 refers to 1 sum raised through funds from various countries to ship ....

so

as this sum is more appropriate

In E the meaning is changed "Kenyan refugees in Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea" is different from the intended meaning "refugees in Kenya from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea"
Hence E is wrong.

Hi expert.

I have a question.

Why D is incorrect?

Can we assume that the phrase " in order that" is always wrong in GMAT ?

If not then how to use it correctly in GMAT.

Thank you.
