b) 200
c) 225
d) 250
e) 275

Please assist with above problem.

40% passed so 60% failed the CPA exam
Quote:
Among the members who have not passed the test, 50 members work at an accounting firm and the other 55 are still in school.

Total students not passed = 105 ( ie 50 + 55)
Quote:
How many members are in the accounting association?

Now, Total members = $$\frac{105}{60}*100$$ = 175

Hence answer will be (A) 175

Its given that 60% failed students = 105 (50 + 55)

60 % of total students = 105

Total students = 105*100/60

= 175

Option A.

Hi All,

This question can be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

We're told that 40% of the members have passed the CPA exam, while the other (50+55 = 105) members have not. We're asked how many total members are in the association.

Let's TEST Answer B: 200 members

IF... there are 200 total members...
40% of 200 = 80
So there should be 120 other members. However, the prompt tells us that there are only 105 other members, so this answer is TOO BIG. We need fewer members; there's only one answer that fits...
