A : Only Cats
B : Both Cats and Dogs
C : Only Dogs

As per question, A + B + C =30
C = 18
B = 6, so A = 6. Hence, A + b = 12. Answer is B

Total = 30
Dogs only = 18
Cats and Dogs = 6
Cats Only = 30 - 18 - 6 = 6

Total number of children who have cats = 6 + 6 = 12

Hi abhimahna and vyshak,
You don't have to even go to SECOND step for answer..

All have either of two or both..
Total 30..
Only dogs 18, so remaining have cats 30-18=12

We can use the equation:

Total = Dogs only + Cats only + Both + Neither

30 = 18 + c + 6 + 0

30 = 24 + c

6 = c

Since 6 children have cats only and another 6 children have both cats and dogs, 12 children have cats.
