use of present tense is wrong - D and C use simple past . But C uses during which looks slightly more appropriate than at a time and hence the preferred choice

D also looks good, anything wrong with using 'at a time'

-At a time - is more time-specific and pin- pointing a narrow point of time, A person' s life isn't rightly measurable in such constricted sense.- During a time - gives a broader time frame and is logically, if not grammatically, preferable

To Daagh, since you picked C:

in C if you remove the non-restrictive clause you get:

Typically, during a time when women had a narrow range of choices, Mary Baker Eddy became a distinguished writer and the founder, architect, and builder of a growing church.

Which doesn't make sense, does it?

Therefore D. No need to wait for OA here.

Typically should modify the verb. SO B,C and E are out.

IMO, OA is D

A . In a period of time when women typically have
B . During a time in which typically women have
C . Typically, during a time when women
D . At a time when women typically
E . Typically in a time in which women

The second sentence is in past tense, so when women typically have had a narrow range of choices => this should be in past. A & B out. "In a period" presents a past time frame. (had had is present perfect, not making sense here)

Typically is in wrong place. typically is modifying Typically Mary Baker Eddy became a distinguished writer and the founder, architect, and builder of a growing church, that is not the intended meaning.
