Let a and g be the age and the grade of the student at the end of the first year. From the stem we have

g = 2a = 40 => a = 20

At the end of the second year

g(2) = 2*(a+1) + g/2 = 42+20 = 62

At the end of the third year

g(3) = 2*(a+2) + g(2)/2 = 44+31 = 75

=> (D) is the correct answer
