(C) 0.4N + 7,200
(D) 0.1N + 8,000
(E) 0.06N + 8,000

Kudos for a correct solution.

total vote = N
vote cast by independent voters = 0.4 N
vote cast by registered voters = 0.6 N

vote received by Ms. Robbins = 8000 + 10% of vote be registered voters = 8000 + 0.06 N

Independent votes for Robbin = 8000
Registered votes for Robbin = 10% of total registered votes

N = Total Votes
0.4N = Independent votes
Registered votes = (N - 0.4N)

Robbins Votes = 8000 + 10% of Registered votes
= 8000 + 0.1(N - 0.4N)
= 8000 + 0.06N

Hi All,

This question can actually be answered with just a little logic (no real calculations are required).

From the first sentence, we know that Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes; and from the second sentence, we know she received 10% of the votes from voters registered with a political party. We're told that N is the TOTAL number of votes cast. Since the 10% that were mentioned was NOT 10% of the total votes, the remaining votes that Ms. Robbins received CANNOT be described as .1N (it has to be something LESS than .1N). There's only one answer that matches.

Final Answer:

(D) 0.1N + 8,000
(E) 0.06N + 8,000

Ms. Robbins received 8000 votes from independent voters. Independent voters are 40% of the total voters.

From 40% voters she got 8000.

From 60% voters those who registered with a specific political party (non-independent) voters= (100-40)=60%

N is the total voters, i.e 100%. She got 10% from non-independent voters.
.Non-independent votes 10% of 60% of ....> (0.1) (0.6) of N....> 0.06N
.Independent votes =8000
Total votes= 0.06N+8000. E

Independent voters 40%, so the registered voters 60%
Ms. Robbin gets 10% from 60% in addition to her 8000
Thus, 0.10*0.60N+8000
= 0.06N+8,000

The answer is E.

Votes excluding independent votes 0.60N, of which Ms. Robins received \(10%=0.06N\)

Total votes she received \(=0.06N+8000\)

The answer is E.

60% votes will be of registered voters; Thus votes from registered voters= 0.1*0.6*n

Re: In a recent election, Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes cast by indepen [#permalink]
Number of votes cast by registered voters: Total - unregistered = N - 8000
10% of no. of votes cast by registered voters: 0.1(N-8000)

Total number of votes she received: 0.1(N-8000) + 8000 = 0.1N + 7200. Option B?

Could anyone explain what am I missing ?

Hi Nadeesh21,

Your calculation assumes that ONLY 8,000 votes were cast by independent voters, but that is NOT what the prompt states (it states that Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes from that group of voters... but how many total independent voters were there...?).

Re: In a recent election, Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes cast by indepen [#permalink]
Let's break down the information given in the problem step by step and use variables to represent the quantities:

1. Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes cast by independent voters.
2. She received 10 percent of the votes cast by those voters registered with a political party.
3. 40 percent of the votes cast were cast by independent voters.

Let's represent the total number of votes cast in the election as N.

Now, we can create equations to represent the information:

First, we know that 40 percent of the votes cast were independent voters, so the number of independent votes is 40% of N, which is 0.4N.

Ms. Robbins received 8,000 votes from independent voters.

Next, she received 10 percent of the votes cast by voters registered with a political party. The number of votes cast by voters registered with a political party is 100% - 40% = 60% of N, which is 0.6N.

Ms. Robbins received 10% of these votes, so she received 0.1 * 0.6N = 0.06N votes from voters registered with a political party.

Now, to find the total number of votes that Ms. Robbins received, we add the votes from independent voters and the votes from voters registered with a political party:

Total votes received by Ms. Robbins = Votes from independent voters + Votes from voters registered with a political party
Total votes received = 8,000 + 0.06N

So, the number of votes that Ms. Robbins received is represented by the expression 8,000 + 0.06N.
