B. Modifier Questions.
Comparing colleges so A, C and D are out since those are all comparing the college to students.
E says V. College has students stronger academically than Lexington, but should be than students in Lexington. E is out.

Answer is B.

B, E wrongly compares students with college.

Re: In addition to having a greater number of students than [#permalink]
E is wrong because it says Vaughn college has students stronger academically than ..... .
Here academically is the adverb but what does it modify? For correct usage of grammer, adverb should be followed by an adjective. But in option e, " academically" doesn't modify anything, hence the option e is wrong.
Among the rest of options, the problems are wrong comparison and misplaced modifers.
It is a sub-650 question.

Re: In addition to having a greater number of students than [#permalink]
Modifiers are arguably GMAT's favorite topic.
When a sentence starts with a modifier, the modifier should modify the first "entity" that occurs after the comma. Typically this "entity" is a noun.

In addition to having a greater number of students than Lexington Community College, <Something>
Let's ask, ...What is In addition to having a greater number of students than Lexington Community College ...

(A) the students in Vaughn College are academically stronger than those in
Hmm,,,the first entity after the comma refers to "students". We should ask, what has .............In addition to having a greater number of students than Lexington Community College..........." . Obviously some other college. The way that the sentence is written, "Students" are being compared to to 'Lexington Community college. Apples need to be compared to apples
(B) Vaughn College is home to students who are academically stronger than those in
Makes sense. We will come back to this.
(C) the students in Vaughn College are academically stronger than they are in
Same mistake as (A)
(D) Vaughn College’s students are academically stronger than they are in
Same mistake as (A)
(E) Vaughn College has students stronger academically than
Makes sense. We will come back to this.

Ok, we are don to (C) and (E)..
Let's look at (E) first
Vaughn College has students stronger academically than.....

The words "stronger" and "academically", seem to be flipped around.
Any word that ends with "ly" is typically an adverb and Adverbs modify verbs, other adverbs and adjectives.
Adverbs answers the questions How?, When?, or Where?
But in the above sentence, academically just seems to be sitting there without modifying anything. Hence this answer option is incorrect.

We are down to (C) and this answer option rectifies the errors that we have identified in the other answer options.

IT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO POST DETAILED AND EXPLANATORY ANSWERS.
YOU KUDOS IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

Re: In addition to having a greater number of students than [#permalink]
First scan: Who has students?

Vaughn college has students, so A,C, and D are out.

Second scan: difference between B and E is the comparison of academic strength. B compares the students to those in another college while E compares students and Lexington. E is out. Wham, Bam, B is the answer in less than a minute.

Re: In addition to having a greater number of students than [#permalink]
In addition to having a greater number of students than Lexington Community College, the students in Vaughn College are academically stronger than those in Lexington, with more national achievement award winners among their ranks.

(A) the students in Vaughn College are academically stronger than those in
(B) Vaughn College is home to students who are academically stronger than those in
(C) the students in Vaughn College are academically stronger than they are in
(D) Vaughn College’s students are academically stronger than they are in
(E) Vaughn College has students stronger academically than

As the author has tried to compare colleges rather than the no of students in Lexington College with the students of Vaughn. So A,C,D cannot be the answrer.Between B and E.E has wrong use of adverb academically. It should be placed before strong.
So the correct answer is B.

+1 B

"Having a greater number of students" should modify Vaughn College --> eliminate A, C, D
"Stronger academically" change the meaning of the sentence: student in Vaughn College are academically stronger --> eliminate E.
Answer: B
