A. had the scientists who made the discoveries had---- correct; the main clause (in the non-underlined part) is in the future past perfect (would have been prevented). To fall in line, the conditional should be in past perfect. - had (past perfect) the scientists had ( meaning possessed) the wisdom

C. if the scientists who made the discoveries had --- simple past ‘had’ does not go with the future past perfect of the main clause
D. had the scientists who made the discoveries have --- present tense ‘have’ is ungrammatical
E. had the scientists who made the discoveries showed – the simple past'showed' is not a replaceable version of the past perfect –‘shown’. This choice is guilty of wrong diction

Copybook third conditional play

This sentence checks us on Conditional tense
here the non underlined part is conditional 3 " would have been (future past perfect) so if part must be in past perfect and only option A has a vern in past perfect tence

I am confused with the conditional construction using had instead of if, could anyone explain this answer? Thanks!
