In an examination, the score of A was 10% less than that of B, the score of B was 25% more than that of C, and the score of C was 20% less than that of D. If A scored 72, then what was the score of D ?

A. 100
B. 90
C. 80
D. 75
E. 60

the score of A was 10% less than that of B,-----A=90% of B\(=0.9B\)
the score of B was 25% more than that of C,-----B=125% of C=\(1.25C.....A=0.9B=0.9*1.25C\)
and the score of C was 20% less than that of D.------\(C=0.8D....A=0.9*1.25C=0.9*1.25*0.8*D=0.9D\)

If A scored 72, then what was the score of D-------\(A=0.9D....72=0.9D.....D=\frac{72}{0.9}=80\)

Solution:

Let x be the score of D.
    • Score of C = \(x – \frac{20}{100}*x = \frac{4}{5}*x\)
    • Score of B = \(\frac{5}{4}*\frac{4}{5}*x = x\)
    • Score of A = \(\frac{9}{10}*x\)
      o \(72 = \frac{9}{10}*x\)
      o \(x = 80\)
         Score of D is 80.
Hence, the correct answer is Option C.

score of A= 72
so score of B = 72/.9 = 80
score of C = 80/1.25 = 64
score of D = 64/.8 = 80
IMO C

We can create the following equations:

72 = 0.9B

80 = B

and

80 = 1.25C

64 = C

and

64 = 0.8D

80 = D

Answer: C
