Remove A, B, and C for wrong comparison. D twists the meaning that the elders respect in most western countries. E is the correct choice.

Hi sir,

went with E as well.

Just wanted quick tips on "do" and "are" in comparison questions.

sir I have a doubt : how can we use they : those should be use for referring to the elderly people
using they implies we are referring to elderly people in japan :exact reference

In Japan elderly people are treated with far greater respect than most Western countries.

comparison: is between how elderly people are respected in japan and western countries
(A) most Western countries - illogical comparison
(B) most Western countries do - comparison error, if we say elderly people are treated with far greater respect in japan than in most Western countries, that will be correct - countries do is not parallel
(C) most Western countries are - parallelism issue
(D) they do in most Western countries -parallism
(E) they are in most Western countries -correct the comparison and parallelism issue'

keyakeaway : whenever you come across than in sentence, identify the entities compared and remove invalid choices

(A) most Western countries
(B) most Western countries do
(C) most Western countries are
(D) they do in most Western countries
(E) they are in most Western countries

Correct answer: D

A. Incorrect because of the false comparison between "elderly people are treated ..." and "most Western countries."
B. Incorrect because of the false comparison as in A. (B) also employs the active voice to compare "Western countries" with how "elderly people are treated."
C. Incorrect comparison because of the false comparison as in (A) and (B) but with the correct passive voice ("are").
D: Incorrect. Correct comparison ("they ... in most Western countries") but with incorrect active voice to compare to how elderly people are treated in Japan.
E: Correct.
