Re: In mammals it is the secondary palate that permits breathing while eat [#permalink]
Hello,

Per the question's cause and effect relationship following is evident: ----->(implies)

Breathing while eating in mammals(BWE) ----> presence of secondary palate(SP)

for high metabolism rate(HMR) ----> breathing while eating is necessary in mammals(BWE)

Using transitive property:
HMR-->SP

It's contrapositive will be:

~SP-->~HMR or no secondary plalate----> low metabolism rate

Therefore, the presence of a mammal with high metabolism rate and no secondary palate is going to decrease author's assertion

For this approach, 'sufficient-necessary condition' concept will be useful.

I could not understand why we have eliminated option B as it directly refers to the meaning that option D refers to. Please elaborate on why not B

Dear vpoddar
B and E can be dismissed because the argument states that "Clearly, breathing while eating is necessary to maintain the high rate of metabolism of mammals."

Yet, B and C does not specify that mammals are breathing while eating

Quote:
(B) low rate of metabolism and the ability to breathe while eating
(E) low rate of metabolism and a secondary palate
