D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
E. partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

I will go with E here.

A. lacks parallelism ( needs to be consistent with "partly...and partly)
B. same as A.
C.steers acquiring is wrong, also changes the meaning of the sentence, which in essence should explain why cross breeding is done
D. passive tense and lacks parallelism ( to provide)
E. fits the bill parallelism maintained throughout.

"should be acquired by~" is unnecessarily wordy and PASSIVE.

i don't understand why E is ||... I thought is should be || to "partly because X and partly because Y... and E uses infinitive "to acquire", which is not || to crossbreeding... so I picked D with passive voice for that reason.

I thought E as well, I think the ||ism is due to - partly X, and partly Y

D - characteristics should be acquired by their steers is awkward

'to acquire" does not have to be || with crossbreeding. Crossbreeding is a noun..not a verb in this case.

"to acquire" only needs to be || with "to provide"

Will go with E.

A/B not ||. C and D have awkward construction

A and B - Out. Use of word 'in part'.
C and D - Out. Use of word 'because' twice.
E - Lonely and hence my pick.

Go with E as well for the above reasons.

D is wrong becaues 1) it is awkward and 2) it changes the meaning of the sentence.

D says that cattle breeders use crossbreading because their steers should have certain characteristics.

E more clearly states that cattle breeders use crossbreading so that their steers can acquire certain characteristics.

it should be starting from partly "in part" doesnt make sense...
so it boils down to C,D and E.
to provide and to acquire go hand in hand together.. so it should be E.[/b]

A,B -> lacks parallelism
C, D ---> awkward

E for parallelism --> 'to acquire'... 'to provide'

D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers - meaning change
E. partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers
