Unless it is a declarative statement, active voice is always preferred in written english. However here active voice is not the issue.

"In response to growing demand for high-end vehicles" automakers did something.
Car interiors cann't respond to growing deamnd :-D

Yes it is a modifier problem also, "that the cars sell" is active , this sounds weird to me. Cars should be sold, no ?

In response to growing demand for high-end vehicles, the interiors of the newest models of car are so luxurious that they sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models.

The phrase cannot modify interiors. So, A, B, D are out.

A) the interiors of the newest models of car are so luxurious that they sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models

B) the interiors of the newest models of car are so luxurious that the cars sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models

C) auto makers have installed interiors in the newest models of car that are so luxurious that they sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models
'they' doesn't have a clear antecedent.

D) the interior of the newest models of car are so luxurious that they are sold for nearly twice the price of last year's models

E) auto makers have installed interiors in the newest models of car that are so luxurious that the cars sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models
correct answer.

Hi,
It is not just closest nouns , but logical nouns 'they' can refer . Noun it can refer could be 'interiors' or 'models' and in option e , it is very clear what entity is sold.

Re: In response to growing demand for high-end vehicles, the interiors of [#permalink]
I have slight different version of this question:

4. Responding to growing demand for high-end vehicles, the interiors of the newest models are
so luxurious that they sell for nearly twice the price of last year's models.
• the interiors of the newest models are so luxurious that they sell
• the interiors of the newest models are so luxurious that the cars are sold
• auto makers have installed interiors in the newest models that are so luxurious that they sell
• the interior of the newest models are so luxurious that they are sold
• auto makers have installed such luxurious interiors in the newest models that these cars sell

Still I chose E for this variant one, A,B and D Out - modifier problem. In C, it means models are so luxurious, rather than to mention the interiors as luxurious as E says.

Experts, Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks

The original sentence begins with a modifier "Responding to growing demand for high-end vehicles,"
but this modifier has no logical subject within the main clause. The subject of the sentence should be
the people or organizations that respond to this growing demand.
Moreover, the pronoun "they" is ambiguous, as it could grammatically refer either to the interiors or to
the models. We know that the intended antecedent of "they" is the “cars”, so we need to find a choice
that makes this intention clear. Finally, the modifier "that are so luxurious" should be placed
immediately after "interiors," not "models"; otherwise, an alternative phrasing without this modifier
should be found.

(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.

(B) The choice repeats the original modifier error: the subject of the modifier is not present in the
sentence.

(C) This choice repeats the original pronoun error: "they" is ambiguous and could refer to either
interiors or models. Also, the modifier "that are so luxurious" is placed incorrectly.

(D) This choice repeats both the original modifier error and the original pronoun error. Also, "interior"
should be plural.

(E) CORRECT. This choice correctly introduces "auto makers" as the subject of the sentence and
also corrects the pronoun error by replacing "they" with "these cars." Note that the use of the
synonym "cars" avoids both the awkward repetition of "models" and the ambiguity of the pronoun
"they."

First take a look at what/who take an action of "in response"
- interiors? Nah so A B D out
- auto makers? Yas keep C E
Next, (C) "they" is ambiguous it doesn't refer directly to the cars
C out
Left with E

C. auto makers have installed interiors in the newest models of car that are so luxurious that they sell
D. the interior of the newest models of car are so luxurious that they are sold
E. auto makers have installed interiors in the newest models of car that are so luxurious that the cars sell

can somebody explain why the "active voice" is correct.

Answer A,B,D are out because of couple of reasons
1) Meaning error : "In response to" means and action taken by someone, so the correct answer should tell who that some one is.
2) Double Conjunction: This is a short cut, If the clause/modifier start with a conjunction, the subsequent clause/modifier should start with the subject(actor of the sentence).

C is out because it does not clears the ambiguity between automakers, interiors, luxurious, models.

E clears out all the errors mentioned above , hence the right choice.
