No need to have "fast" when we already have "rate of increase"

I agree ,but with rate of increase you can use faster - think of it in terms of velocity or frequency: X's velocity(rate of travel) is faster than that of Y(rate of travel/velocity). The same is true for frequency of occurrence. What are your thoughts?

9. In the 1980's the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970's.
(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of
(E) two times greater than

Can someone please explain to me this?

I constantly have trouble with these types of questions.

(A) twice as fast as ---->Illogical comparison, twice fast as in 1970
(B) twice as fast as it was in -->its perfect, but still redundant due to presence of 'it'.
(C) twice what it was in ---->fragmentation error
(D) two times faster than that of -->use of comparitive degree to compare and that refers back to rate i.e a perfect sentence.
(E) two times greater than -->Again Illogical comparison, two times greater than 1970??

IMO B ....

We need in 1970's not of 1970's (of minority population) ...though 'it' may not be clear ..... the other 4 options don't seem to be correct.

watss the OA ???????

IMO C.

twice what it was in - "in" corrects compare like with like and "twice what it was" eliminates redundancy.
"twice as fast" and "rate of increase" seem redundant.

In the 1980's | the rate of increase | of the minority population of the United States | was nearly [(C) twice | what it was in] the 1970's

I'll go with C, sounds grammatically better than other options.

Why cant it be twice as fast, since fast describes rate of increase?

it can be, but here the correct form would b either: twice as fast as in OR twice as fast as what was in

in options present here
A>comparison is illogical
B>it -->redundant

Narrowed down to B and C because they both complete the comparison.
Rate of increase refers to "it" so repeating the "As fast as" is redundant.
C is my choice

What is the difference between B and C? I originally chose B, which was wrong.

In the 1980's the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970's.
(A) twice as fast as--------> compares the rate of inc to 1970(illogical and eliminated)
(B) twice as fast as it was in----->it cannot refer to rate of increase of the minority population of the United States (eliminated)
(C) twice what it was in---->keep it
(D) two times faster than that of------->rate of inc cannot be faster
(E) two times greater than---->rate of inc is compared with 1970(illogical and eliminated)

BY POE C is the best

That is true, a rate cannot be fast! That is a good way to think of it.

(C) should be the correct answer because "faster rate" makes no sense, it's no car or no horse, just some number, percentage.

All answer choices except (C) and (E) use adjective "faster". In (E) "rate of increase" is compared with "the 1970's" and also makes no sense

Hence (C)

I think B & C both are correct
but since C got superior because it is more Concise than B.
