Definitely C.

Rate cannot be faster or slower as indicated in choices A and B.

E.g.: Smith's height is tall doesn't make any sense. Similarl is the case with "xyz's rate is faster".

C) since rate cannot be "fast".

My answer is B
1) as...as... creates a comparison. The first as is followed by an adjective or adverb. The second as is followed by a noun, a phrase, or even a whole claue.
2)Correct idiom is twice as fast as.
3) To relate quantities by multiplication, use times and as...as...together.

I think the correct answer is B.

Rate of increase can be faster or slower relative to another number.

As an example, if you substitute faster for slower it could say:

In the 1980's the rate of increase of the minority population of the U.S. was nearly twice as slow as it was in the 1970's. (1970's rate was 50%, 1980's rate was 25% - rate is slower, but still an increase)

As many people correctly pointed out, B tries to modify the noun "rate" as "fast", making the sentence illogical.

In addition, B uses the pronoun "it" incorrectly. The pronoun "it" must refer to the SAME "copy" of thing. For example:

-Mike saw a scrumptious piece of cherry pie at the shop. The temptation was too great, and he had to eat it.

Here, "it" refers to the same piece of cherry pie, Mike had seen earlier.

"it" in B refers to the same rate of increase that appears in the sentence earlier. Of course, this is incorrect, as the purpose is to compare two DIFFERENT rates.

Hope this helps!

In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.

(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of
(E) two times greater than

the OA is C..I am confused, why not B?the rate of increase can be comaratively faster in 1980 than in 1970.. Any thoughts?

compare the increase in China was fast, twice as fast as in US
the rate of increase in Chine was twice what it was in US
so IMO the rate can't be fast cause it's not kinda Lamborgini

In this sentence, we are focusing on the rate of increase. Say the rate of increase doubles. Then it becomes twice as much

The rate of increase, however, is not a speed. Thus we wouldn't use speed.

Compare this to the following example:

Compared to sports cars from the 1950's, today's sports cars are twice as fast.

On the GMAT, you will typically see rate, which requires much .
