In think it's B.

Because we have to compare the rate of increase "in the 1970's" with that IN 1980's. Between B and C, B is better IMO.

For me it is,
In the 1980’s rate of increase …. of US was two time faster THAN rate of increase of the 1970’s.
In the 1980’s rate of increase …. of US was two time faster THAN THAT of the 1970’s.

Why do we need IN.
In is used just once , to say that the time we we are considering is 1980.

Yes, C is correct. I didn't judge it correctly, the rate of increase cannot be twice faster.

should be C. We know that its a rate of increase, so saying 'twice as fast' is redundant. Eliminate A and B

Also, the proper usage is 'twice' in this example, not 'two times'

I would go with either B or C but since B is much wordier, C is the winner. It has the verb "was" and adverb "in".

would D and E still be incorrect because of 'two times'? I eliminated D and E beacuse of wrong comparison, not because of the usage of 'two times'.

why is 'twice' correct and not 'two times' for 'the rate of increase'?

thanks.

C is the most concise. As they already mentioned increase, you don't need faster/greater/etc.

(A) twice as fast as [ rate of increase is compared against 1970’s – eliminate it]
(B) twice as fast as it was in [rate of increase – as fast as – redundant – eliminate it]
(C) twice what it was in [ “it” correctly points to Subject “rate of increase” - Hold it]

(E) two times greater than ["rate of increase" and greater – redundant – eliminate it]

C for conciseness (elimination of redundancy). A, E incorrectly compare rate to the 1970s. Twice as fast is fast incorrectly refers to "rate" while the actual intent is to refer to "rate of increase".

Agree with bsd_lover..its C.. which intends to say that the the number x which is the rate of increase is now twice what the number was in 1970's

Hi mates,

IMO D

this has been ver tough for me!!

I think twice is an adverb, and we need an adjective (wich is modified by nearly). So, A, B and C out.

Between D and E, I'd go with D because of "tha that of"

OA and Source?

Cheers
