choose business as a major also made the major the most popular among men.

The conjunction as well as implies that business had already been the most popular major for men and that in 1985, for the first time, it became the most popular major for both sexes.

You need women as well as men.

A should be it.

If we use men AND women, then the sentence means that those 28%of the women who chose business made the business a major for both the groups...

As well as says that it was already a major for men and 28% women after enrolling in the program, made a major for women.

B uses THE MEN... which is wrong comparison.

This question tests you on the concept of parallelism.

The non-underlined portion of the sentence says that this course became the popular choice not only for men but also for women.
We need a simple structure that mirrors the structure ‘for women’ …

We can scan the options to see the options that follows this.

(A) as well as for men

(B) as well as the men - Eliminate

(C) and men too - Eliminate

(D) and men as well - Eliminate

(E) and also men - Eliminate

Eliminate Options B, C, D, and E.

Option A is the best choice.

Frankly, I wasn't too sure of A (to me the "for" after as well as could have been avoided) So I used POE.

(A) as well as for men -- Okay. Lets keep it. I don't like it though.
(B) as well as the men -- Incorrect. "the men". Meaning distortion and incorrect parallelism.
(C) and men too -- Incorrect. "and" "too". Redundant.
(D) and men as well -- Incorrect. "and" "as well as" Redundant.
(E) and also men -- Incorrect. "and" "also". Redundant.

Left with A, so wager on A.

Akurian -- Question. The correct idiomatic usage is "X as well as Y". In this case if X is a preposition plus noun, then the same structure would be followed by Y in all the cases? Or could it be a case of ellipses as well?

I would go with A. for women as well as for men. Agree for is unnecessary, but seems more parallel than using "the" in B.

I also chose A....B has the in front of men and not in front of women so it is not parallel

to me for in option A seemed little redundant :?

apart from parallelism, how we can choose best answer ? a little tough because usually "as well as" is wrong answer ....
some expert please go through this question .
