Hi All,

This question is based on a few 'line rules' that you will be tested on when you take the GMAT:

1) The angles on a line add up to 180 degrees.
2) Opposite angles are equal.

While there are a couple of different ways to go about answering this question, you would likely find it easiest to deal with one variable at a time.

We know that 2X + 3X = 180, so let's start there...

5X = 180
X = 36

Next, we know that 2X = Y + 30. Plugging in the value of X, we have...

2(36) = Y = 30
72 = Y + 30
42 = Y

The question asks us for the value of Y.

Final Answer:

We can first solve for x. Since 2x and 3x make a straight line:

2x + 3x = 180

5x = 180

x = 36

We also see that 2x = y + 30; thus:

2(36) = y + 30

72 = y + 30

42 = y

Here 5x = 180 -> x = 32

2x = y + 30 -> x = 42 (Option E)
