"different than" - incorrect idiom, B, D, E - out
A, C - both seem to be correct, but A, an original sentence, sounds better: As ...submarines prowl..., the increasingly are engaged...

going with E here is why:

the story the sentence is trying to tell us is that the sub's involvement in potentially dangerous task is increasing i.e. we would like to modify the verb "engage" thus ACD are out.

Between B and E - E is idiomatic and parallel:

As X, Y - correctly used in E

E: As subs prowl (noun+verb), they increasingly engage (pronoun+verb) in missions far different than the tasks for which they were built and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years

B: As subs prowl (nount+verb), the missions they increasingly engage (noun pronoun verb) in are far different than the tasks they were built for and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years.

Hi guys,

this is a good one!

IMO C

(A) they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built I think it's wordy coz there is no linking word between missions and its modifier
(B) the missions they increasingly engage in are far different than the tasks they were built for //ism: submarines and missions
(C) they engage increasingly in missions that differ significantly from the tasks they were built for Hold
(D) the missions they engage in are increasingly different than the tasks for which they were built //ism: submarines and missions
(E) they increasingly engage in missions far different than the tasks for which they were built the same as A

OA and Source?

Thanks

D

'the missions' describe the first clause.
Between D and B, D is parallel.

What is the OA ?

increasingly is adverb, so A, C, D are out.
of B and E, B is idiomatic ....... while E has "differant than"

so B for me.

I would go for D.

"for which they " parallel . Hence B and C are out.

Among A , D and E
they increasingly sounds awkward. It should be "they are increasingly".
Hence D

(A) they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built
(B) the missions they increasingly engage in are far different than the tasks they were built for
(C) they engage increasingly in missions that differ significantly from the tasks they were built for
(D) the missions they engage in are increasingly different than the tasks for which they were built - Correct
(E) they increasingly engage in missions far different than the tasks for which they were built

Pls confirm the QA.

i like "different from" in A. the only problem i have with A is "increasingly are engaged". what exactly "increasingly" modifies here the verb "are"?

"Are" looks awkward to me in this sentence structure.
