KUDOS
Hello, few days back I gave GMAT for the second time and scored 720(47 q, 42 v ) the first time I gave GMAT I had scored 650 (47 q, 34 v) . I have 3 years work experience in a local IT company and hold a ME degree from Cornell with 3.0 / 4.3. I was a team member of a NSF project in cornell. As I had some family issues, I was not able to score extraordinary marks during my ME and had to return to india as soon as I finished my education. I had completed my b.tech from India from a good college and had scored 73.9% . My co curricular activities involve volunteering for blood donation camps in my college and donating blood regularly. Also I am associated with green peace India and have won several group discussion competitions . I have also participated in technical presentations at national level and now a days am learning jazz dance. With this background what are my chance of securing admission in top 25 colleges and do I need to give GMAT again because of low quant score

Hi,

You have a good GMAT and an avg. GPA. I would suggest you to apply with these scores keeping following pointers while writing application essays: leadership qualities, achievements in or outside work place, maturity, ability to work with others and professionalism. These are crucial while preparing for interviews as well. If you are able to skillfully articulate these attribute in essays and interviews then you would stand a chance in top 25-30 b-school(s). You may try your chances in b-school(s) by clicking http://www.apphelp.co.in/b-school-selector.php.

Let me know in case of further queries. You may PM your details for school selection and discussion in length.

Regards
Erina

Hello!!

Okay - let me break this down. With the scores of Indian profiles I have seen both as a consultant and as an Student AdCom member, I can tell you that it comes with no surprise that you are in the IT field. However, you have a pretty good GMAT score and have studied outside India. You would need to flush out some leadership stories and make a compelling case of fit with the schools you are applying to. However, I'd abstain from using very superficial examples such as blood donation camps / donating blood regularly. While I truly believe donating blood it is a noble endeavor (if you ask me, we need more people to volunteer), I would not recommend using such stories unless you have a passion towards organizing such events and you hold it near and dear to your heart. Differentiating yourself from other candidates becomes hard when a lot of people write donating blood as an extra curricular activity of primary importance.

By weeding out good stories from your Cornell days, Green Peach involvement (would need to know more about the capacity in which you were involved), and your work experience, I think you have a pretty good shot at the top 25. PM me a copy of your resume for a free evaluation.

Best wishes with your B-School journey.
Cheers,
Ash

Well done on your GMAT persistence. Looking at the inputs you have provided, your IT work experience, low performance at Cornell and relatively generic extracurriculars (blood drives vs sustained work at one thing with increasing responsibility and leadership) likely put you in a tough position at the top 10 schools. Focus on some schools that are friendly to IT professionals like Kelley, McCombs, and Tepper. Great essays and passionate interviewing do indeed matter beyond the scores and grades, so leave adequate time for preparation.

Good Luck,

Alex
