" while at the same time they have introduced" in A they has no clear referent plus ...having... is not a good construction. B is the ans. The elimination of the rest of the choices has already been explained :)

although b seems to be the best choice i feel it is not parallel "improved and introcucing" .....had it been while at the same time they have introduced some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants that have..would have been better

I think i can expalin this in much better way

A) Comma + ing modifies the subject. Here the subject is Industrialization and modern methods. Hence wrong.
B) that in Choice B is referring to Pollutants , which is the intended meaning . Hence correct.
C) Which is followed by comma . Which is referring to time . Hence wrong.
D) Here that is referring to Time which is wrong.
E ) Having is Verb-ing modifier modifying the subject Industrialization and modern methods. Hence wrong.

The intended meaning of the sentence was pollutants gone virtually unregulated.

Moderators please correct me if i am wrong.

Please give kudos if i am correct. :)

A. while at the same time they have introduced some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having --- Modifier - [comma]having is incorrect as it modifies the verb of preceding clause
B. while at the same time introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants that have
C. while they have introduced some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time, which have --- Meaning Change - placement of "at the same time". Actual meaning - 100K pollutant were introduced at the same time as the SOL improved. This sentence - 100K pollutants were introduced all together. This was relatively tougher to spot I guess...
D. but introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time that have --- Sentence structure - but should be followed by a clause (not sure about this one but when I read the whole sentence, it seems awkward.
E. but at the same time introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having --- Sentence structure & Modifier - same errors as D&A resp.

'BUT' should connect a dependent clause except a modifier( no subject -verb). There is no subject or verb in the second statement. Hence D is wrong.
Another example is

of the Sun but have never been sighted on the.....

It is certainly redundant! While itself means "period of time" .However, in this question we do not have a choice which is free of this redundancy therefore we have to pick one of them anyway(B here).

Hope it clears!

please explain your reasoning..

A. while at the same time they have introduced some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having - Having gone virtually unregulated introduces a cause-effect scenario, but there is no such cause and effect relationship here. E.g. He felt sick, having eaten too much.
B. while at the same time introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants that have - This is grammatically correct. The Simple Present introducing is used here in order to show that the pollutants can still be introduced. The methods in question are not done introducing pollutants, they are still capable of introducing pollutants.
C. while they have introduced some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time, which have - Changes the meaning by misplacing "at the same time". Also "which" incorrectly modifies time instead of pollutants
D. but introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time that have - Changes the meaning like C because of the placement of "at the same time"
E. but at the same time introducing some 100,000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having - Having introduces an incorrect cause-effect scenario, just as A

isn;'t while and same time redundant?

I am 99.99% sure that 'while' and 'at the sae time' is redundant and what I don't understand is how the people over here can defend it as this same error showed up in another GMAT Prep Questions.

Is it just because they know the OA many people try to defend the same.

Experts if you can please help.

I will try to locate that Question of 'while' and 'at the same time' being wrong and will post the same once I am done with my exam.

I am not sure what change in meaning is referred above in these two examples, but the easiest way to eliminate C is "which have". "at the same time" is an adverb/adjective[more below] - so, "which" cannot refer back to pollutants.

All, I can see that in the second option "They have introduced 100,000 pollutant at the same time", "at the same time" is clearly ambiguous - an adverb for the action "have introduced", in line with the preceding action "have improved", or an adjective for the "1000 pollutants"[ in which case, we mean that all the pollutants were introduced at the same time, and not "at the same time" goes along with the "introduced" and "improved"]. By placing "at the same time" in the beginning, as in B, we are sure that its an adverb, thus no ambiguity. Having said that, I would not rely on this difference in exam scenario. The "which" error is enough to eliminate C in so called 2 seconds !!

Cheers !! :-D

I think that while can only jump over prepositional phrase that modifies the preceding noun. 'at the same time' does not modify pollutants and therefore usage of which creates confusion.

Can some explain to me the way 'introducing' is used in B. If it is a verb, how can it be parallel to 'have improved' ??? In case it is a present participle, how can it stand alongside 'while', which I understand is a subordinating conjuction that requires a full clause?
