I just had a quick look at your ESR. I think you are giving undue importance to the initial questions and spending unreasonably high time on them. I definitely think you can improve your score by 20-30 points just by improving your timing. Good luck with your test!

I truly appreciate your input! I'm feeling a little better about my time management this time around; will update ya next week once the dust settles :-D

Not sure I'd agree completely with this assessment. The timing on the 2nd attempt doesn't look too bad. As illustrated in the difficulty graphs, the difficulty level of questions actually went up between section 3 and section 4 when the test taker was running out of time. From this point on, the impact of performance on the final score is not very significant; despite answering most of the questions wrong, the test taker was still handed relatively difficult questions, which suggests that at this point his assessment was more or less already decided.

Thank you all for posting your ESRs - provides lots of data points to compare. I am posting the ESR of my 3 attempts, yes I have been trying for a while to be part of the 700+ club.

My score on the verbal section has been quite consistent but bad and I feel I am stuck at 33/35 levels. Sectional performance on the verbal section has also fluctuated quite a bit. Will appreciate any pointers before my next attempt..TIA..

Here is the ESR I got for a GMAT I took on 7/2. I scored a 720- Q49, V39 IR6 AWA6.

Sorry these got uploaded in a weird order: The first graph and pie chart set is quant, the second graph and pie chart set is verbal. I retook the GMAT since I felt the 720 didn't reflect my academic abilities accurately, and scored a 770 on 7/23. I will post the ESR for that test as well to help the community out as much as possible. Feel free to leave me kudos, I am so addicted to GMAT at this point I will probably keep checking these forums and doing problems.

It's nice that the GMAC has slowly added features to the ESR over time. It would be especially helpful if the GMAC were to provide per-question timing information and correct/incorrect for every question, as well as indicate exactly which questions were experimental, but hey, beggars can't be choosers I guess. At the moment, it's moving in the right direction for sure, but it's still just vague enough to keep the precise GMAT scoring algorithm inscrutable.

On page 2 of this thread, Dabral has already concluded from the updated ESRs that 9 of the 37 quant questions are experimental, and that 11 of the 41 verbal questions are experimental, which was the common wisdom up to this point, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

"What about the IR section," you ask?

The information we need lies within an especially revealing new feature: the "Percent of Questions You Answered Correctly" in the "Integrated Reasoning Performance" section.

One take-away from the newly updated ESR's I've seen so far is that the IR section always has 9 questions that count, and 3 unscored/pretest/experimental questions. According to the GMAC, somewhere from 8-12 of the IR questions count. However, GMAC has indicated in the past that "all students have the same amount of experimental questions," which would further support the hypothesis that there are exactly 9 out of 12 questions that will count toward your score (the ESR does not provide information on whether you answered the experimental questions correctly), and 3 experimentals.

In most cases (but not all--see examples below!), your IR score is simply the number of questions that you answered correctly out of the 9 questions that counted. However, as you can see, IR scores are also prone to being scaled upward by a point, especially on the high end of scores, and depending on the difficulty of the section.

Despite the GMAC's vague official answer that 0-4 IR questions (out of 12) are experimental, every ESR with this expanded information that I've seen so far has supported the hypothesis that it's always 9 questions that count.

How do I know this? Because the percentages of correctly answered questions that I've seen so far have always aligned with a denominator of 9 (percentiles rounded to the nearest integer):

1/9 = 11%
2/9 = 22%
3/9 = 33%
4/9 = 44%
5/9 = 56%
6/9 = 67%
7/9 = 78%
8/9 = 89%
9/9 = 100% (but you would still get an "8" because the IR section is scored out of 8 points).

This exact same denominator method can of course be used to determine the number of experimental questions on Quant (9 of 37) and Verbal (11 of 41). UPDATE 4/5/18: On the updated, shorter GMAT, the number of experimentals has lowered from 9 to 3 on Quant, and 11 to 6 on Verbal, beginning 4/16/18. However, the number of experimentals on the IR section (3) has stayed exactly the same.

Below are some examples, taken (with permission) from some of my private students and from GMAT club screenshots. Being able to precisely infer the number of experimentals on each section should provide helpful implications for GMAT strategy. The GMAC may have unintentionally disclosed some information that it would have preferred to keep confidential, which is exciting to me! Of course, this could always be modified in the future, but it's still good to know for now.

Notice how this student scored a 1 out of 8 with 1 of 9 questions right (11.1%).

Notice how this student scored a 2 out of 8 with 2 of 9 questions right (22.2%).

Notice how this this student scored a 3 out of 8 with 3 of 9 questions right (33.3%).

Notice how this student scored a 4 out of 8 with 4 of 9 questions right (44.4%).

Notice how this student scored a 5 out of 8 with 5 of 9 questions right (55.5%).

Notice how this student scored a 5 out of 8 with only 4 of 9 questions right (44.4%). The IR scores on this GMAT must have been scaled upward to reflect the overall difficulty of this particular IR section.

Notice how this student scored a 6 out of 8 with only 5 of 9 questions right (55.5%).

Notice how this student scored a 7 out of 8 with 7 of 9 questions right (77.7%)

Notice how another student scored a perfect 8/8 with 7 out of 9 questions right (77.7%).

Notice how this student scored a perfect 8/8 with 8 out of 9 questions right (88.8%)

Of course, 9 out of 9 (100%) will earn you a perfect 8/8 as well!

If I see the first IR report you posted, it says 56% correct and an IR score of 6. However, I also had 56% correct on my exam and I had an IR score of 5. Moreover, my percentile is 52nd. Strange :roll:

Hi Keats, happy to help. Your results are in line with what I've seen so far, but yes you did get a bit unlucky. You answered correctly on 5 out of the 9 IR questions that counted, which is 55.5 percent, rounded up to 56%, and 52% overall. Only two more questions correct, and you could have potentially scored a perfect 8/8 (see third to last example).

You are correct that the first report I posted (6/8) was also only 56% correct (5 out of 9), but 67% overall. The explanation is that this is person managed to score a 6/8 with only 5 questions right, while you scored a more traditional 5/8 with the same number of questions correct, for some unknown reason probably related to the respective difficulty levels of your particular IR sections.

The lesson here: what matters most is your scaled IR score itself, not necessarily just the raw number of questions you answered correctly. As you can see from the results, sometimes 4 correct out of 9 can result in a score of 5/8 and sometimes 5 correct out of 9 can result in a score of 6/8.

In other words, the IR score is adjusted somewhat depending on test difficulty, and not quite as predictable as simply the number of questions correct (although close).

Exactly mcelroytutoring This is what I could make out of it. We just cannot predict the IR score on the basis of the number of correct questions you get on the section.
