Instead of dividing a number by 13, a student in an exam divided it by 31. The quotient obtained was 234 less than the quotient obtained after dividing it by 13. What was the number if the number is perfectly divisible by both 13 and 31 ?

Assuming the number is 31X, we get the equation 31X = 13 (X + 234)

Solving for X, we get X = 169

The number = 31*169 = 5239.

We can form an equation letting the number be x.

( X / 31 ) - 234 = X / 13

Solve for X. Answer is B.

Let the number be x
\(\frac{x}{13}\) = \(\frac{x}{31}\) + 234

\(\frac{x}{13}\) - \(\frac{x}{31}\) = 234

\(\frac{18x}{403}\) = 234

x = \(\frac{234*403}{18}\)

x=5239
