what's different b/w "instead of" and "rather than"? thanks

"Instead of" is used when an item simply takes the place of another.

"Rather than" is used to denote preference.

"Rather than" is preferred over "Instead of", you will find on many questions "Instead of" as wrong option. (though this is not fixed rule!)

"Rather than" is preferable to use for VERBS.

"Instead of" is preferable to use for NOUNS.
