Shortsighted? It's really a brilliant policy, see, anybody who's smart and educated and who has anything to contribute, we make it very difficult for them to enter the country. But then anybody who wants to enter from Mexico and get involved in organized crime, or to simply collect welfare and other social benefits is welcome, they just need to climb over a little chain link fence.

Watch out, Johnny. No need to start immigrant bashing. Really.

The only people I intended to bash are immigrants who come to the US with nothing to contribute. Anyone who wants to immigrate and contribute (whether they're an engineering PhD who wants to work for NASA or a manual worker who wants to stock shelves at a retail store) is welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Here is another interesting perspective by Unic. Chicago prof Gary Becker detailing the implications of the current immigration policies.

It's ironical how the politicians act exactly opposite to what is logical and what is advised by intellectuals.

Well, but they are allegedly following what the majority of the people in the country would like. So they are still enforcing democracy, which is kinda their main job, right?

.
Anyway, I agree with Aau, let's keep the immigration as a whole issue aside and focus on the H1B visa cap and its implications for MBAs. We could discuss it for hours in person and in a civilized manner (or not), but I think at a forum it would be difficult to handle.

I foresee the post may escalate into Praetorian-posted emoticons.
