Read somewhere that GMAT is shortening the two 8 minutes optional breaks into two 5 minutes optional breaks.

Could not find anything on MBA.com.

Is this true?

Good question though since it's not written in their website
then it's probably just a rumor.

I have not heard this rumor doubt that they would cut the breaks to 5 minutes. The point of this new GMAT is to integrate the new IR section. The best place to ask would be at mba.com or contact your closest pearson center that administers the GMAT exam.
