Hi, I hope this is the right place to ask this question.
As far as the GMAT is concerned, does the symbol for the square root of a number (don't know how to type it here) mean the positive square root only?
For example, even though there are 2 numbers whose square is 9, if I see square root 9 on the gmat, should I assume it means the positive number 3 only?
Thank you very much!

qrt of 9 is + or -3. You cannot assume it is always +3

What is the value of X ?
1) x <> 0
2) x^2 - 9 = 0

Here X^2-9 = 0 means x^2 = 9 or x = +3 or x= -3
one cannot say for sure. However I believe it is safe to assume that the number inside the sqrt sign is +ve

Yes. If x^2 = 9, then that will give us x = +3 or -3

But sqrt(x) = |x| (ALWAYS)
