It should be E.

Statement 1: It basically tells us magnitude of x is greater than that of y but it does not tell us the signs. x > y if x is positive or x < y if x is negative. Insufficient.
Statement 2: It basically tells us the same thing as statement 1.

Since they both basically tell us the same thing, even when combined, they are both insufficient.

Both statements are giving us the same information.
x and y both could be greater than 0, and in that case x>y but if both x and y are less than 0 then x<y
Insufficient.
Answer is E

Is x > y?

(1) x^2 > y^2

It means that |x| > |y|

Let x =4 & y =-2..........x > y

Let x = -4 & y =-2.......x < y

Insufficient

(2) |x| > |y|

It is same info above

Insufficient

Combining 1 & 2

Still Insufficient

Answer: E
