From statement 1 : Y = \(\frac{1}{x^3}\). If x is an integer then y<x or else y>x. Hence Insufficient
From statement 2: x<0. Nothing can be concluded. Since we don't the value of Y. Hence Insufficient
Combining 1 & 2 : since x<0. Y will always be greater than x. Hence Sufficient.
C is the answer.

(1) y = x^(-3)

(2) x < 0

(1) y = x^(-3) if x=2 then y=1/8 no
if x=-2 then y=-1/8 yes. no definite answer so insufficient.
(2) x < 0 we don't know anything about y here so insufficient

both (1)&(2) combined
if x=-2 then y=-1/8 yes.
if x=-1/2 then y=-8 no. no definite answer so insufficient.

answer should be E

Question stem:- Is x<y ?

St1:- \(y = x^(-3)\)

Situations at which st1 is valid:-
a)x=y=1
b)x=y=-1
c)x=2, y=0.5
d)x=0.5,y=2
e)x=-2,y=-0.5
f)x=-0.5, y=-2

Question stem is inconsistent at above circumstances. Insufficient.

St2:- x < 0
No info about 'y'.
Clearly insufficient.

Combined, situation (b), (e), and (f) hold true.
b)x=y=-1
e)x=-2,y=-0.5
f)x=-0.5, y=-2

Again, the question is inconsistent.

Ans. (E)

(1) y = x^(-3)

(2) x < 0

Statement 1:\(y = \frac{1}{x^3}\)

For x = -1, y = -1.... x = y hence NO

For x = 1/2, y = 8.....x < y hence YES

Statement 1 alone is Not Sufficient

Statement 2: x < 0

Clearly Not Sufficient

Combining both statements

For x = -1, y = -1.....x = y hence NO

For x = -2 , y = -1/8......x < y hence YES

Combining is Not Sufficient.

Answer E.

Thanks,
GyM
