Re: Is |x - y| > x - y ? (1) y > x (2) The positive difference between x [#permalink]
We don't exactly have to elaborate I guess.
If we look at statement 1: Y is greater than X
Let suppose Y is 4 and X is 3
=> |3 - 4| > 3 - 4
=> |-1| > -1
=> 1 > -1
(Sufficient)

Statement 2: positive differnce 3 is |±3|
If its Y-X = -3 = 3 (not sufficient)
X-Y = 3 = 3 (sufficient)
Therefore B can't give one specific answer.

Hence A is answer

Re: Is |x - y| > x - y ? (1) y > x (2) The positive difference between x [#permalink]

Is |x - y| > x - y ?

The question basically asks whether x - y < 0, or whether x < y. (When x - y >= 0, |x - y| = x - y)

(1) y > x. Directly answers the question. Sufficient.

(2) The positive difference between x and y is 3 units. This translates to |x - y| = 3, which is obviously not sufficient to get whether x < y.

Answer: A.

Could you elaborate on how you got y > x? I got x>y in pre-solving.

Here's my working-

x-y > x-y =>0 or x-y > -(x+y) => x -y> -x +y => 2x > 2y => Is x>y? Y/N?

Where have I gone wrong?
