KUDOS
Interview Debrief: Nov 2016 (R1), Evening slot, New Delhi
Academic Profile (WEAKNESS): X (CBSE 84.6%), XII (CBSE 76.0%), B Tech ECE (GGSIPU 72%),

5 and a 1/2 years of work-ex in client-facing Technology Consulting (Presales)
GMAT- 700 (Q49, V35, AWA 5.0, IR 8)
Extra-curriculars (STRENGTH) [Travelling / Photography, Reading (non-fiction), Competitive Gaming (FPS)]

Interview went great as well.
I willingly reached just 20mins before the slot. However I should have reached 30mins before as we need to write an essay too.
Essay topic word: Artificial (Damn! That's so boring. I barely wrote 3 sentences in there.)
Things were pretty rushed for me but that was a planned advantage to not be intimidated by the tense environment in the waiting room.

Panel had 3 members (a woman and two men)
*I would like start off with a mid-interview moment that tipped the scales.*

{
"What is your biggest failure?"
Personal or professional?
"Tell us both."
Professional - I talked about losing an RFP Bid by less than 0.5% of the deal value.
Personal - "Well.. I am single aaand.. Hashtag #ForeverAlone!" :D
}

We all laughed for 30 straight seconds; twice!
It broke my nervousness, and brought in a positive touch to the overall experience.

On the way to the interview room, the interviewer escorting me initiated some casual talk and asked where I lived in Delhi.
"On weekends at Pitampura, weekdays with MBA aspirants at Saket, as it is nearer to workplace in Gurgaon."
Are your roommates applying to ISB as well? "Oh Yes. He is awaiting his interview call."

- Introduction
I did a well prepared "tell me about yourself" speech.
(Because this part was well prepared, I had the mental bandwidth to analyse the interviewers as well.)

* I was nervous for the first few minutes.*
- Do you want me to draw curtains if that's uncomfortable.
"No, I just wish to have some water from this bottle on the table."
"Sure. Please make yourself comfortable."
* followed a couple of nervous audible gulps in the awkward silence*

- Why MBA?
Explained my need to learn more on the business facets, specially for technical client engagement.

- Why MBA at this time?
Explained about decent industry exposure working at the interface of business and technology, and the identified areas where an MBA could have helped.
Also that further delay will clash with plans of getting married.

- What would you do if you don't get selected?
Answered about global exchange projects lined up on the job. I called them a "consolation prize".
Also mentioned an MBA application for a US School which would be a"costly Plan B" though.

- Work experience related discussion.
Explained my contribution to the team (in terms of account management initiatives) and my unique approach towards a client.

{the earlier mentioned moment where I saw God's humor particle take over my brain}

- Hobbies related discussion.
Confidently shared the vast experience and gains from it. This is a STRONG area for me and I could defend it splendidly.
They asked me about technicalities of photography; I described some terminology but then shared my honest opinion that I prefer shooting in Auto (simple) mode. One of them asked me that what would I click within that 4th floor interview room - I looked around and mentioned, "the sunlight is bright here and there are dried watermark trails on the window. I'll focus on one of those trails and overlap it with the pavement on the ground outside."

- Questions I asked to the panel.
1) Apart from academics, how are the parties in ISB.
They discussed within them self and mentioned that now some city regulations have reduced the outside-the-campus fun.
2) Generic profile-centric question - how many candidates from presales domain apply here.
One of them said, "Quite a few infact".

I gave my best shot. Would have had no regrets on rejection; only disappointment.

The result - Roommate and I, both CRACKED it! (got Mohali campus)
At this point I would like to heartfully thank ISB for letting someone like me with a medicore academic profile, demonstrate my strength during an interaction.

Notes:
- Questions may not be in correct sequence.
- There was a LOT of interaction during 20-25 mins of my interview.
- Most of the interview questions originated from my prior answers itself.
- I took no help from any consultant for essays and application.
(Handful of intellectual friends did help me thankfully.)
- I took no classes for GMAT Prep. (GMATClub forum questions and mock tests proved sufficient)

Reposting my Interview experience for everyone's benefit !

4th time Re-Applicant- Indian IT male, Admitted to ISB

Hi folks on this forum, for my previous ISB interview, check my signature where I got rejected ! This time my interview happened over Skype. I opted for Mumbai but had to travel to Oslo, Norway for an official assignment. So here it goes:

Interview was around 11:00 AM IST which meant 6:30 AM in Oslo. I woke up at around 5:30 AM and was set for the interview. At the scheduled time, I got a call over skype. It was known that I had to call them as well . So idea was to have video over skype and for audio , the normal phone line.

I was having a office laptop so I could not install skype in that. Although I had it in my phone. Soon when I got Skype call on my phone from ISB, and when I tried to dial in, I got to know at a time, calls can be made either through skype line or normal phone line. First Blunder.

I thought then to use, the web version of skype in my laptop and continue using phone line as usual. But adding to misery, my laptop screen said: Installing updates ( 30 % complete) , Don’t turn off your computer. Man, I thought I was gone and it was panic situation for me. In all this chaos, ISB folks were on video and were seeing me.

They were kind enough to understand the situation and agreed to continue over skype for both audio and video. Then it all started, meanwhile time lapsed :6-8 mins. There were 3 people, 2 Alums (A1, A2) and 1 from Adcom. (P1). A1 and P1 interacted with me most while A2 was observing and spoke only once.

A1: So ,tell us what your profile is and what are you looking to get in ISB?
Me: Explained this..mixed up lot of things but was mostly crisp.

A1: What are you doing in Oslo?
Me: I told purpose of my visit and nature of engagement.

A1: How your work is benefitting the client and asked about my profile in detail (roles/responsibilities etc)
Me: I explained but he responded I am not getting your answer. He asked me to explain in detail and in layman language. I told about automation stuff in project to which he replied: don’t you think so this is indeed cutting down workforce for your company, how it is beneficial for your firm. Explained in detail. Now P1 interrupted.

P1: That’s all fine, tell me what is the main revenue generation aspect in Norway( As I was in Oslo)
Me; Answered something.

P1: Why Norway is part of Scandinavian group?
Me: I thought it was a GK test and somehow answered this, although not fully perfect.

A1: So you have been doing lot of stuff in your current organization, Why MBA and Why now?
Me: Was prepared, answered this. Lot of cross questioning. He emphasized all that you want to achieve could be done through external courses. Why MBA? And when I explained , he said I why don’t you try for IIM 1 year program , why ISB? Explained this as well.

P1: What is your role in startup?
Me: (I mentioned I have been associated with a startup) Explained my role. Then he asked what will happen to startup when I ‘ll leave it for ISB? Explained. Then he asked stats, revenue model and our break even scenario. He countered that similar products are in market, what’s different. Explained. Cross questioned a lot around it.

A1: Interrupted and asked, how can it be possible you are not working full time for that startup but have been involved in so many things there?
Me: Explained.

P1: Your post MBA goals don’t seem to be aligned with your profile?
Me: I was totally clueless at this point. I literally sat with a frozen view. Somehow explained my goals. I was dead nervous at this point.

A2: (Here that folk spoke and that too in sarcastic way): So you think at ISB you will be able to achieve all these?
Me: I told him, its’ not only about academics but the overall experience and journey will help me to inculcate those skills.

A1: Any questions?
Me: I asked a question.

P1: Why did you asked this question, how are you/ your goals are related to this?
Me: Explained that.

P1/A1: Thanks for your time and enjoy your weekend in Oslo. I asked for apologies for initial hiccups, they said it’s all fine.

Overall the panel was quite cooperative. I believe it’s all about being true to yourself because be sure you will be cross questioned around Why MBA and your goals. Be thorough with your application, what you have written in essays and don’t try to fake, ISB alums and Adcom are one of the sharpest minds, so no point in trying to fool them around. Rest, have confidence and faith in yourself even if you feel low at any point during the interview.

PS: It’s important for me to mention the team behind Strategy4Gmat (http://strategy4gmat.com/isb-admissions/). I owe this interview to them. The team behind strategy4gmat makes sure that you are fully prepared for the interview.
Regular follow ups and reminders helped me to never lose focus. For aspirants looking help in their essays/interviews, don’t hesitate to connect with them. (http://strategy4gmat.com/isb-admissions/)You won’t regret and that’s coming from someone who itself struggled 3 times before to get admit including one with interview where I was dinged.

Thanks for all the patience for reading the post. In case of any queries feel free to ping me. I’ll try my best to help you out.

Hi Everyone, I have updated the collection of interview debriefs to include those of R1 converts too and it's representative of the latest paradigm in terms of interviews by ISB. Since a lot of you may convert your interviews I like to collect your details in a google form before I send the collection to you, as you can help expand it later.

From hereon just fill out this form and I will mail the collection to you positively within a day.

Interview Debrief
Commerce, GMAT 720
Most part of my interview was focused on my plan to join the development sector and how MBA and
ISB make sense from that perspective. They touched upon my past experiences with the sector and
clarified time and again why I would want to do an MBA and not something on the lines of MSW or
Public Policy. The interviewers emphasized on how ISB does not offer a lot of placement opportunities
within the development sector. I made it clear to them that from what I understand the development
sector is moving from a philanthropy model to an entrepreneurial model and hence skill sets that an
education in MBA can offer are important. I did not hesitate to mention that as much as I want a job in
this field I am not in a position to take a pay cut or work for below reasonable compensation. I was
given small cases on social sector problems and related matters. In an interview that lasted 40 minutes
around 30 was spent on the above. It was a very comfortable experience as the interviewers were very
patient in listening and moreover I was at ease talking about development sector work.

Interview Debrief
Location: Madrid, 27th February 2016.
Engineer (at the time of interview)
EEO Admit

"Questions related to product management
Important skills required for PM - Had mugged up various points from Google
Do you have product ideas in your mind - Shared 4 ideas. Always had an entrepreneurial mindset so coming up with ideas was not difficult. Two were highly impressed with the ideas.
Long Term goals - Maybe startup, maybe climb the corporate ladder, but will stick to the tech domain.
Role in current projects
Market Analysis for the company I am working for - Was thorough about the numbers and the competitors
Interview took place over Skype and continued for 15 minutes. It was unexpectedly short which made me feel either I was too bad or I was too good. Mainly revolved around my career goals but didn't grill me much.
Got the admit on 14th March, 2016..."
