At first I thought C but it doesn't specify that injuries forced her to sit out those years, just that she did sit them out.

I go for D as well.

one more vote for D....

Reason why others are wrong:

A : Since 'It' was used, the sentense should also have 'that' but since its missing, this is wrong.

B : "After winning ...at age of 16" is a modifier and it relates to the subject, Tracy Austin and but here, its modiying 'injuries' and not tracy. Hence, its wrong

C : Changes the meaning of the sentense

D : Correct usage of pharases and modifiers

E : Use of 'when' sounds wrong to me.

Plz send in ur veiws/comments and also the OA/OE.

Thanks,
Krishna

But 'that' IS present in A.
Why is A incorrect then?

In my opinion, the phrase between 1984 to 1988 in A doesn't seem right.

has to be D. C is wrong because the last part of the sentnece is an adverbial modifier.

(A) It was because she was plagued by injuries that tennis celebrity Tracy Austin, who won the Italian and U.S. Opens at age 16 in 1979, sat out the years between - we need 'from X to Y' not 'between'. 'Between X and Y' is correct but not 'Between X to Y'

(B) After winning the Italian and U.S. Opens in 1979 at the age of 16, injuries plagued tennis celebrity Tracy Austin and forced her to sit out from - "After winning the Italian and U.S. Opens in 1979 at the age of 16" incorrectly modifies "injuries"

(C) Tracy Austin, the tennis celebrity who, plagued by injuries, won the Italian and U.S. Opens at age 16 in 1979, sat out from - awkward

(D) Plagued by injuries, tennis celebrity Tracy Austin, who won the Italian and U.S. Opens at age 16 in 1979, sat out the years from - correct

(E) Tennis celebrity Tracy Austin, who won the Italian and U.S. Opens at age 16 in 1979, was plagued by injuries when she sat out between

D uses correct modifiers and there is no change in meaning as in C, 'between' is incorrect because 'to' is present.
