James: Many people claim that the voting public is unable to evaluate complex campaign issues. The television commercials for Reade in the national campaign, however, discuss complex campaign issues, and Reade is, at present, more popular than any other candidate.

Maria: Yes, Reade is the most popular. However, you are incorrect in claiming that this is because of Reade’s discussion of complex campaign issues. Reade simply strikes the voters as the most competent and trustworthy candidate.

Which one of the following, if true, most supports Maria’s counter to James?

(A) Reade’s opponents are discussing some of the same issues as Reade.

(B) Reade’s opponents charge that Reade oversimplifies complex campaign issues.

(C) Polling data show that Reade’s present popularity will probably diminish over time.

(D) Polling data show that most voters cannot identify Reade’s positions on campaign issues.

(E) Polling data show that some voters consider Reade competent and trustworthy.

+1 for D.

Stimulus :
As per James: Complex campaign issues --> Popular than any other candidate.
As per Maria : Competent and trustworthy --> Popular than any other candidate.

So, in order to strengthen Maria's counter we need to see for the option that vouches for the latter

(D) Polling data show that most voters cannot identify Reade’s positions on campaign issues. --> Correct

Hence, D.

Imo D

James cites some informaiton and then presents a contradiction to that information.
Maria on the other hand gives some other reason to the observation made by James. NOw to strengthen Maria's claim we have to show that the popularity of the Reade is indeed because of the factors by Maria.

A is irrelevant.

B If this is the case then the cause of the popularity is not because of competency and trustworthiness. This weakens Maria's claim.

C Irrelevant

D correct if the public is not able is not able to identify Reade's position on many issues then the reason for Reade's popularity may be different. This choice removes alternate cause for the same outcome.

E Same info as the passage. Drop it.
