James’s grade point average puts him in the top third of the graduating class of college A. Nestor is in the top tenth of the same class. Elizabeth had the same grade point average as Nestor. Nancy has a lower grade point average than Elizabeth.

If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?

(A) James has a higher grade point average than Elizabeth.
(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(D) Elizabeth and Nancy both have a higher grade point average than James.
(E) Nestor and James both have a higher grade point average than Nancy.

Please post answer and logic. I seem to always be getting these types of questions wrong on a consistent basis, and want to know what Im missing.[/i]

I am not too confident about this. But my guess is C. Only C you can be sure from the passage - Nester and Eliz GPA are equal, Nancy is lower than Eliz and hence Nester must be higher than Nancy.

I suck at CRs too....but I'll give it a try...

My vote for E.
a) You know that James must be > Nestor, and they are comparable because they're in the SAME class.
b) So if Elizabeth = Nestor, then James must be > Nestor AND Elizabeth.
c) If Nancy < Elizabeth, and Elizabeth = Nestor, then Nancy < Nestor
d) Since we've already established that James > Nestor/Elizabeth, then James > Nestor > Nancy

I go for C.
Lets see how

Premise : James is in the top 1/3rd of class ..Lets say the class size is 12
So James is in top 1/3*12=4

James (top 4)

Nestor is in top 10
Elizabeth has same has Nestor (so 10)

Nancy has lower grade than Nestor (so >10)

Now we cant make a relationship between James,Nestor/Elizabeth because if X=18 James has more grades, but if X>30 then Nestor has more grades

But we can make a relation between Nestor, Elizabeth and Nestor
=> Nestor >Nancy so C

Late but Got C.

Nester = Eliz > Nancy
James? = could be anywhere depending on the class size.[/i]
