James Watson, one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold his Nobel Price for $4.1 million at auction in 2014 after income opportunities dried up as the result of racist and sexist assertions he made throughout his career.

A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
The pronoun 'that' cannot be used to refer people hence the use of 'that' makes this sentence incorrect

B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
The pronoun 'whom' is used when the noun that it refers to is the object of the sentence. E.g. Whom/Who will the award be given to - The award will be given to her. Here 'her' is the object of the sentence hence we should use Whom. In the current sentence 'James Watson' is the subject and not the object.

C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
who is correctly used to refer to a person and sold in in simple past tense. keep for now.

D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold
The sentence provides a time marker i.e. 2014 and clearly indicates that the action is already completed, hence the sentence requires simple past 'sold' and not present perfect 'has sold'. We can eliminate D for this error.

E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold
This option repeats the same error as the option D, hence we can eliminate this option as well.

Correct Answer - Option C

A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold "who" will be used in place of "that"
B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold --"who" will be used in place of "whom"

C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold--there is no verb before "sold"

D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold --it means that its the only scientist who discovered the DNA, but the question stem means that he is one of the scientist.

E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold --correct choice , Verb "has" is used and present the correct meaning too

Quote:
James Watson, one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold his Nobel Price for $4.1 million at auction in 2014 after income opportunities dried up as the result of racist and sexist assertions he made throughout his career.

Intended meaning:
The sentence presents a few facts about James Watson.
He was one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix.
He sold his Nobel Price for $4.1 million at auction in 2014 AFTER his income opportunities
dried up because of racist and sexist assertions he made throughout his career.

Quote:
A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

Incorrect usage of modifier = THAT. We use THAT to modify things and places, not human beings.
Correct usage- WHO

Quote:
B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

Incorrect usage of passive modifier- WHOM

Quote:
C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

Correct. WHO modifies scientists, discovered and deciphered are parallel verbs for who
and sold is correct verb tense in simple past tense for Watson

Quote:
D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

HAS SOLD - Incorrect.
Recall that past perfect is used for earlier of two events. The time marker AFTER
in non-underlined portion suggests that first his opportunities dried up and later
he sold his noble prize.

Quote:
E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

Same error as (D)

Split-1 - ''sold'' vs ''has sold'' - since the time frame is mentioned - ''has sold'' is not required. Eliminate D & E
Split-2 - ''that'' vs ''whom'' vs ''who'' - use ''who'' to denote people. ''whom'' - to refer object of a sentence. ''that'' - to denote people

A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
usage of ''that'' is wrong to denote people

B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
''whom'' is used to refer object of sentence

C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
Correct

D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold
''has sold'' is wrong

E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold
''has sold'' is wrong

Project SC Butler: Day 114 Sentence Correction (SC2)

James Watson, one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold his Nobel Price for $4.1 million at auction in 2014 after income opportunities dried up as the result of racist and sexist assertions he made throughout his career.

A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

OFFICIAL ANSWER

My annotations are in blue typeface.

The issues tested are pronoun choice and verb tense.

• In option A, the relative pronoun that refers to things, not people
Eliminate A.

• We use who or whom to refer to people

To determine whether the correct pronoun is who or whom,
replace who with he
and whom with him [remember that whom and him both end in M].
HE DISCOVERED, or
HIM DISCOVERED?
He discovered. We need who, not whom. [The "m" trick works. :-D ]

Eliminate choice B

• Option A does not determine the original meaning of the sentence.
Yes, we use the original sentence to try to figure out what the meaning
is supposed to be, but there is nothing special about option A.

• Option D is wrong because it uses the wrong verb tense
We do not need the present perfect. He sold the Nobel prize 5 years ago.
Has sold connotes an event that has ended in the recent past.

Eliminate D and E

The correct answer is C.

2. James Watson's income opportunities dried up as the result of racist and sexist assertions he made throughout his career

POE

A) one of the scientists that discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

Between 'who' and 'whom'

'who' - subject - discuvered, so we don't need 'whom' here. (B) is out.

B) one of the scientists whom discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold

Ususally in SC we expect changes / splits at the beginning and ending of the underlined portion.
If we pay close attention beginnig modifiers of the 3 answer choises is good, all of them refer to James.
But at the end to have 'sold' vs 'has sold'.

which one is correct? 'past simple' or 'present perfect'
we have a small hint here 'in 2014' it is time in the past, so we know the time of the action in the past, hence 'past simple' is correct.
(D) and (E) out.

D) a scientist who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

E) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, has sold

C) one of the scientists who discovered and deciphered the DNA double helix, sold
