Jason, who had always lived the life of a hedonist, found himself regret his life choices in old age.

First split is verb tenses: FOUND vs FINDS vs HAS FOUND. As we have Past Perfect in the non-underlining part, we need Past Simple. So, C and E - out.

C) finds him in regret of his life choices in old age
E) has found himself regretting his life choices in old age

HIM vs HIMSELF - Jason's action is directed to himself, so "him" does not work and even add some unclear meaning about whom Jim actually found - himself or some other guy. So, B is out.
B) found him regretting his life choices in old age

I chose D, even it is wordier. For no good reason, just it sounds better to me. The question I left with whether "in old age" placement is good enough? Shouldn't it be placed closer to "found" to reflect that "he found himself in old ages" but not regreting about "choices in old ages"?

A) found himself regret his life choices in old age
D) found himself with the regret of his life choices in old age

But none of the choices have regret directly after him or himself. Regret should be a modifier and not a verb. If you put the subject in place of pronoun it’s becomes, Jason,.., found Jason regret. Which is awful

After narrowing the options down to A and D, I went for D because the construction in A 'found himself regret his...' seems weird.
Intuitively, it feels like 'regretting' should replace 'regret' in A.

D seems to convey it better - 'found himself with the regret...'

Is this reasoning fair?

What is the error in the answer choice A in the above question
