units in the answer option should be in minutes, considering it to be in minutes the entire duration would be 55 mins-> option E

Jed can stuff 7 envelopes per minute. Ed can stuff 3 envelopes per minute. Fred can stuff 5 envelopes per minute. If Jed and Ed team up to complete half of a 600 envelope job and then Jed and Fred team up to complete the job, how long will it take to complete the entire job?

A. 1/2 hours
B. 2/3 hours
C. 11/12 hours
D. 25 hours
E. 55 hours

Solution:

We see that Jed’s rate is 7 x 60 = 420 envelopes per hour, Ed’s rate is 3 x 60 = 180 envelopes per hour, Fred’s rate is 5 x 60 = 300 envelopes per hour. Thus, for a 600-envelope job, it will take Jed and Ed 300/(420 + 180) = 300/600 = 1/2 hour to stuff the first 300 envelopes and it will take Jed and Fred 300/(420 + 300) = 300/720 = 5/12 hour to stuff the remaining 300 envelopes. Thus the entire job will take 1/2 + 5/12 = 6/12 + 5/12 = 11/12 hour.

Re: Jed can stuff 7 envelopes per minute. Ed can stuff 3 envelopes per min [#permalink]
Jed + Ed combined rate = 10 envelopes / min
Jed + Fred combined rate = 12 envelopes / min

Half of 600 = 300

300 / 10 = 30 minutes
300 / 12 = 25 minutes

30 + 25 = 55 minutes = 11/12 hours. Answer is C.
