Hello, jabhatta2. Regardless of what people might say, the sentences you have written above in pink would not be considered correct on the GMAT™. They beg the question, Persuaded whom? You can write, I persuaded [someone] not to fire her. You can also write, X persuaded Z to fire Y, but there is an agent who does the persuading and another who becomes persuaded. That is just the way this particular verb operates. I think your sentences could work with a similar word instead, perhaps recommended.

All of the above is correct, although in a different context, you could recommend a person: I recommend her for the job or I recommend John for the job. Language is a tricky proposition. Quite often, I cannot rationalize why one verb, in this case, or a phrase or clause behaves in one way while another does not, but I learn what I can from each exception to my general rule and see if that knowledge is brought to bear on other questions. In this case, I think you have extracted just about everything you could. I hope such considerations may serve you well down the road.

Can someone explain when liberating and persuading are not parallel?

This is query is not related to this question, rather a general one.
For Example if the sentence is

"Joan of Arc, a young Frenchwoman who claimed to be divinely inspired, turned the tide of English victories in her country by doing X and by doing Y"

Can we remove the second by? and if yes, when can we do so ...

I am bit confused on choosing elements that needs to be in parallelism.Please find below a problem form OG 13 -127 and my understanding on it.

Joan of Arc, a young Frenchwoman who claimed to be divinely inspired, turned the tide of English victories in her country by liberating the city of Orleans and she persuaded Charles VII of France to claim his throne.

(A) she persuaded Charles VII of France to claim his throne
(B) persuaded Charles VII of France in claiming his throne
(C) persuading that the throne be claimed by Charles VII of France
(D) persuaded Charles VII of France to claim his throne
(E) persuading that Charles VII of France should claim the throne

As per my understanding ,Joan of Arc , ..... , turned the tide of English victories in her country by liberating the city of Orleans and by persuading Charles VII of France to claim his throne.

Shouldn't 'by liberating ' and 'by persuading' be in parallel construction ?

I know that this was touched in many of the previous post's but I still have a question:

Ignoring other idiom issues, I ended up with "e" because i made the error of making "liberating" parallel to "persuading". I did this because I read backwards from "and" and made both ends of "and" parallel (Liberating and persuading).

How would I have known to go and make "turned" parallel to the second half?

Shouldn't there be a COMMA before AND to make it parallel? Without the comma I read "Joan ... turned ... by liberating and persuaded"

You mean that there should be a comma before 'and,' which is not underlined? Why would anyone bother about a non-underlined part?

problem in choice A is that
"she" dosenot seemingly refer to Jone arc. why we add 'she" to make confusion./

this point is more basic than "COMMA+FANBOYS". I dont think gmat test comma+fansboy.

I do not quite agree to your analysis.

In this official sentence, the name of only one woman is mentioned - Joan of Arc. Hence Joan of Arc is the only logical noun antecedent for the pronoun she.

The sentence most certainly has the structure error. The two independent clauses have been connected just be and. Such connection is certainly an error on GMAT SC. GMAT SC does test the correct usage of connectors in such cases.

3.In Compound sentences, we can omit the subject in the second IC, if the subject of the first IC can fit in as well as the subject.

I interpreted the sentence as "Joan of Arc turned the tide of war by liberating and persuading..."

What if Charles VII is not easily persuaded but Joan of Arc did just that and because of THAT action, she turned the tide of war?

Am I missing something here? Can the experts please help?

I've a thirst to know the use of his in choice D (correct choice). In this choice, his has been used for 'Charles VII', right? But, if the sentence is something like below, then will it be 'pronoun ambiguity'? I mean: is there any chance the second her may mean Joan of Arc?
