John and Mary were each paid x dollars in advance to do a certain job together. John worked on the job for 10 hrs and Mary worked for 2 hours less than him. If Mary gave John y dollars of her payment so that they receive the same hourly wage, what was the dollar amount, in terms of y, that John was paid in advance?

a. 4y b.5y c.6y d.8y e.9y

What's wrong with the following solution:

x/10 + y = x/8
x = 40y

Is it because y is a total payment and I'm equalizing hourly wages using y? Thoughts?

x/10=hourly wage of john, x/8=hourly wage of mary.
mary gives y to john then
(x+y)/10=hourly wage of john, (x-y)/10=hourly wage of mary
(x+y)/10=(x-y)/8
10x-10y=8x+8y
2x=18y
x=9y
