A. John, as well as Jane, are

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The singular subject John does not agree with the plural verb are.

Remember that only and makes a subject that consists of several singular nouns a plural subject:

x and y + plural verb. The subject is x and y
    Example: John and Jane are happy together.

x as well as y - the verb is singular if x is singular, plural if x is plural
    Examples: John, as well as Jane, is abroad.
    Many doctors, as well as nurses, are attending the conference.


In addition, this answer choice is stylistically flawed. Using as well as instead of and is redundant.

Good! And and as well as have the same meaning, so using the single word and is more concise than using the three-word phrase as well as.

While this answer choice is grammatically correct, it is not the best of the five answer choices. There is another answer choice which is also grammatically correct and which is stylistically better - that is, more concise - than this one.


E. John and also Jane are

While this answer choice is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed. Since also means the same as and, using them both is redundant.

REJECTED. The right usage is 'John, as well as Jane, IS'

B. John, as well as Jane, is
REJECTED - While thee is nothing rong with this option, Option C is better, as it is short and expresses the intended meaning crisply.

C. John and Jane are
RIGHT ANSWER - This option is short and expresses the intended meaning crisply.

D. John, as is also Jane, is
REJECTED - 'as is also jane, is' - awkward.

E. John and also Jane are
REJECTED - 'John and also Jane' - Redundant phrasing.

Can you explain why?
The only reason I chose B over C is because the question stem itself has "as well as". I can't find any other reason though. Kindly help.

In my opinion, it should be option C as it perfectly defines "John and Jane are nice, hardworking and tall."

What is the use of as well as, if the end goal is to use "is" for a single person John. If we are including both, then it should definitely be "are" and that is perfect in case of Option C

IMO C as both John and Jane are of equal importance. There is no reason for one person to be an additive.

Option B
as well as does not affect the verb. accompanied by, as well as, in addition to, together with follow the same rule. I believe the topic is called subject with accompaniment.
