Distance travelled by John Running = R
Distance travelled by John walking = 8 - R

Time taken John Running = R/6
Time taken by John walking = (8 - R)/2

Total Time Taken = R/6 + (8 - R)/2 = 3

(R + 24 - 3R)/6 = 3

24 - 2R = 18

2R = 6

R = 3

Distance travelled by John Running = 3
Distance travelled by John walking = 8 - 3 = 5

Ratio of the distance walked to the distance traveled = 5/8

Answer is D. 5/8

Formula used : Distance = Speed * Time

Given data
Speed(Walking) = 2miles/hr
Speed(Running) = 6miles/hr

Let the time spent walking be x, hence the time spent running will be 3-x

2x + 6(3-x) = 8(Total distance to be covered)
Solving for x, we get x=2.5(which is the time spent walking)
He will cover 5 of the 8 kms in these 2.5 hours.
Distance walked / Total distance = 5/8(Option D)

its easy
if he walked x miles then he will take x/2 time to travel that distance and he will run for 8-x miles. therefore his time for running will be 8-x/6
total time = time taken while walking + time taken while running
3 = x/2 + 8-x/6
solve this and one will get x= 5 which is the distance he walked. total distance traveled is 8 miles so ratio will become 5/8
