John was one of what? - "the few people to get THEIR (referring to the few people and hence plural)hands on an advance ticket for U2's North American tour"

So only B & C remain in contention. The reason for the delay was Bono's back injury. So Bono & his back injury is unneccessarily confusing.

I'll go with C

E. who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury

Reason: meaning of the sentence convey that the whole event happened in the past.
John was the one.
So I simply eliminated A,B and C. B and C also has got pronoun antecedent error. Their hands should be his hands.
D and E correctly mention the event in past tense. between D and E, E is more concise. So Elephant it is.

Should be C - as we need "Their" for people instead of his for Jhon.

In the last part "a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury" use of "and" over here changes the meaning!!

Hope it helps.

This has a 2-2-1 split with who got his/to get their/to get his. D,E/B,C/A
The to get their is ruled out due to the singular - plural (one of the few - their ) mismatch
D & E are wrong because they view a single reason as two different ones " 1. front man Bono and 2.his back injury"
A has the correct agreement and concise usage. Hence A

IMO C.

Here B & C are the contenders because of SV Agreement(Their). C says that tour was delayed because of front man Bono’s back injury while B says that a tour that was delayed by several months due to (caused by) front man Bono and his back injury-seems illogical.

John was one of the few people to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono’s back injury.
A. to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury.
Incorrect --> I will eleiminate this beacuse of "Due to"

B. to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono and his back injury.
Incorrect --> I will eleiminate this beacuse of "Due to"\

C. to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury.
CORRECT

==> 'their' correctly refers to People.

D. who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono and his back injury.
INCORRECT

1) Here "who" is referring to PEOPLE therefore we need to have " their " instead of 'his'

2) Bono and his back injury. ==> wrong..it is emphasizing that there are two things which caused the delay, one is front man Bono and other is "his back injury"
In actual it's only "front man Bono’s back injury." which caused the delay

E. who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury

INCORRECT

0) Meaning change ==> 'by several months' is missing

1) Here "who" is referring to PEOPLE therefore we need to have " their " instead of 'his'

2) Bono and his back injury. ==> wrong..it is emphasizing that there are two things which caused the delay, one is front man Bono and other is "his back injury"
In actual it's only "front man Bono’s back injury." which caused the delay

C
and just changes the meaning .....
we don't need to name bono, as it is not being referred anywhere else; front man bono's injury should suffice.
one of the few people to [ plural verb].

Here the pattern is "one of x that/who y". Y is always plural

The actual sentence contains portion "to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour", which is originally a part of relative clause beginning with "who had".

Let us rephrase the above example:
John was one of the few people who had to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour. The noun that precedes this relative clause is few people, not John. So, use "their" instead of "his". Here actual sentence is in the form of infinitive phrase which is the concise form of the above given rephrased example.

Other part of the sentence is a resumptive modifier which is adding extra information at the end of the sentence. Here, Bon and his back injury do not clear the meaning. It shows two different things that caused the delay.

Hence C.

Kudos to the post that explains the reasoning for correct & incorrect answers.

"One of the few", hence we should use singular pronoun .. B,C gone ..

D,E - Bono's back injury is much more concise and meaningful than Bono and his back injury. also E trimmed an important piece of information that the tour was delayed for months

IMO ... A

Hi stunn3r

You can see this type of question over and over again in GMAT test.

Always be aware of the "OF phrase" that can change singular to plural noun.
For example: Nevada is one of the few states which have desert weather in the U.S
==> few states is plural ==> "have" is correct.

Same as in this question: John was one OF the few people <== "few people" is plural. John is only one person of the group "few people" ==> "his hands" is wrong. Thus, A is not correct.

Hope it helps.

Hi pqhai,
Excuse me for jumping in. I have read that "one of plural+ infinitive + singular" & "one of plural +that/who + plural"
If we go by this, C seems to be incorrect. Can you explain ?
thanks

I read all the explanations citing option C to be the correct answer. I have one basic question if someone can explain. Why we are not going with his when the subject in the sentence is very clearly singular, John.
thanks!

I read at Veritas that when you see "of" word, the word preceding "of" becomes the subject. So in this case subject has to be John. So why not singular pronoun?

from what i know

John was one of the few people to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono’s back injury.
A. to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury.

C. to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury.

when you have a structure like this
"john was one of the few people to get his hands on an advance ticket"
it typically follows this pattern

subject(john was one of the few people) + relative pronoun(none in this case) + plural(his hands)

had it been "john was one of the few people who got their hands on an advance ticket"

this appropriately follows the structure
suject + relative pronoun + plural.

hence, according to me, A is correct.

consider a kudos.

I do not agree that the form "one of x" takes the agreement of x. This is an old argument in grammar circles. Consider the following:

1) "One of these things is not like the other" (you wouldn't say "One of these things are not like the other" because you're talking only about ONE [singular] of the many things...).

2) "None of these bicycles is mine" (none is singular (it means "not one"), and the speaker is saying that not one of the bicycles is his/hers). You can probably hear that "None of these bicycles are mine" is wrong and awkward (but is commonly spoken, I might add).

So consider again: "John was one of the few people to get his hands..." This should be correct because we are talking about John and John only. If the author wanted to convey that many people got their hands on tickets, the author could write something like "A few people, including John, got their hands" or "John and a few other people got their hands".

I feel that some people here are simply agreeing with the answer only because it has been revealed that the answer selected prefers "their" versus "his". Yet I think many grammarians would agree that the sentence simply is grammatically incorrect (or at least debatable).

Just because people here on this forum (or even GMAT PILL itself) declares the answer "correct" does not mean that it is correct or that the majority opinion makes it correct.

A. to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury.
This choice incorrectly uses “due to” to present the reasoning why the tour was delayed. Instead “because of” should be used.

B. to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono and his back injury.
This choice has same error as in A.

C. to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury.
This choice is the correct one. Now “because of” has been used instead of “due to”.

D. who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono and his back injury.
This answer choice has several errors. “Who” now modifies “people” and is followed by pronoun “his” that refers to John. To correct this one, we need to substitute his with their. Even though “due to” has been changed to “on account of, the sentence now implies that there were 2 reasons that caused the delay: front man bono (1) and his back injury (2). This is not the intended meaning of the sentence.

E. who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury
This answer choice has the same pronoun error as answer choice D.
