(C) and (D) does proper comparison,
(D) has a verb-tense error.

Hence (C) is best.

went with D - but, soon realised that there was indeed a pronoun agreement error - FA is C

(FYI: that can be used only for singular pronoun reference, those should be used for plural)

D is correct

"those" properly refers to "economy and society"
"its" properly refers to "preindustrial state"

my answer is C.

art did serve a different purpose in preindustrial state than art does serve in our society today
