Just got back from writing the GMAT, 690 (42Q/42V) rewrite?

Just got back from writing the GMAT, 690 (42Q/42V) rewrite? [#permalink] New post   28 Aug 2013, 13:59
I just got back from writing my gmat for the first time, only got 2 hours of sleep last night and i took a sleeping pill which didn't work and left me pretty groggy. I only snapped out of it 15 minutes into quant but not sure if the damage had been done.

Here's the thing, I finished quant 20 minutes early and verbal 15 minutes early. I thought I was doing well in quant to when I got a difficult VIC but then after that I started getting "easy" questions. My PT's ranged from 640-700, but in the past 2 weeks i really improved my math (or so i thought), and was thinking that so long as I get the verbal score I know I can I could probably get 730. Pacing was obviously poor for quant, I should have spent time double checking my answers, I was feeling pretty good about it midway.

The median for the schools I'm applying to is 670, should I bother rewriting? I feel like if I keep practicing math and brush up on SC (which is likely where I lost my marks) I could perform very well, not sure if its worth it though.

Generally, how is a 690 score viewed? Do admissions have a "700-or-bust" mentality when it comes to a gmat score?

By the way I'm pretty sure I didn't perform well in IR if that matters, had to blindly guess on 2 questions and was unsure for another 3.

I'm sure the last thing you want to do is retake the GMAT, but remember higher GMAT == more money. If you apply to schools with a average GMAT of 670 a 720 GMAT would give you a good chance of getting a full ride. It sounds like you did really good job considering not getting hardly any sleep. I would only not retake if you were not confident you could improve your score, or there were other personal reasons you can't take it again. I'm thinking you can improve your Q42. Best luck with everything.

I'm sure the last thing you want to do is retake the GMAT, but remember higher GMAT == more money. thanks for the reply. Ya I feel I could do much better in quant, I spent a TON of extra time mastering tough geometry problems so I would be prepared for the higher level questions, but they never came. I have the grades and resume to get into some Ivey schools but with a 690 and especially my quant score it isn't going to happen.

I think I'm going to take a week off, go back at it and see if I'm up to studying again, if so I'll probably re-write (assuming I'm PT'ing around 730+). Money isn't the issue to be honest, I'd rather get accepted to a top program with no $ than get a full ride at a lesser school, I guess I put a lot of stock in pedigree, and when you go to business school you really are paying for the brand.

You have such a strong verbal score and bringing the quant from a 42 to a 45/46 really isint that hard If you pound the basics... You'll be looking at a 700 score with that... Defenitely retake!

Thanks for that! I've decided to retake January 3rd. Will give me tons of time to improve and the school i want to go to starts accepting applications in march.
