Just scored 380 - Absolutely Devastated [#permalink]

I scored a 380 on my first attempt at the GMAT. I believe I tried to absorb too much material in too little time. I only prepared for about 4 weeks. My preparation included studying from the Princeton Review Study Guide, working the practice bin questions, and completing 2 full length tests (in test environment) provided by GMAC.

What really has me shaking my head is the fact that I scored a 490 and a 520 on the two full length practice tests! I am only required to score a 470 on my GMAT, so I felt I was in pretty good shape.

During my test, I felt I got off to a great start with the AWA. Then moving into the quantitative, I felt I was able to keep the momentum somewhat. It seemed as though I was getting medium to hard questions for the mostpart, so I felt I was on target to reach my 470 goal. I know from studying that I was in trouble with geometry, and I knew I'd have a difficult time with data sufficiency.

I really struggled with the Verbal questions. Through my preparation, I made great strides, and started feeling comfortable with Critical Reasoning. I knew I'd struggle with sentence correction, but I believed I knew enough of the rules to get some questions correct. What baffled me was the difficulty of the Reading Comprehension Section. I had a very difficult time understanding the passages, and therefore felt I was taking wild guesses at the answers.

Guys, I'm not going to make excuses for myself, because that's not the type of person I am. I failed miserably, and last night when my score popped up was the first time I actually felt stupid.

How can I recover from this shlacking, and score a 470? I refuse to take the test until I know with 150% certainly that I will score 470, because I don't have the money to continually invest.

I am really seeking some good, sound advice. Thanks Guys!

I'm in a very similar boat with you, man.

I only studied about 3.5-4 week and realized that was not going to be adequate, especially since this type of test is not my forte.

I took the gmat last Saturday and made a 410. I only need a 480. I was pretty upset, but like you said, its my fault. I also used the Princeton review book. Did all of the bin questions in there and I also did a chunk of the questions in the gmac's Official Guide.

So, bottome line, I soon plan for formulate a serious plan with the help of the great resources of this site. I'm expecting to prepare for several months.

Someone else posted yesterday that they made a 360/370 on their first practice attempt. They was a link in that thread to get you started down the right path.

Anyway, I look forward to the responses.

I won't lie guys, I think my approach was pretty pathetic. I figured a 470 was very manageable, so for the most part I simply worked practice problems and didn't really analyze the solutions as well as I should have.

I think the biggest knife in my side was the fact that I scored 490 and 530 on the practice tests. It's unfortunate that GMAC provides practice tests that aren't at all indicative.

OK Guys.......so I scored 380 right?

I need to score a 470 to get into the MBA Program I'm applying.

Now I'm looking to improve my score, and try and get in the 550 range (giving me room for error), because I refuse to take this test a 3rd time.

I'm not attemtping to score 700+ or anything like that. What literature, study guides, websites would be most beneficial for me to increase my scores. There is a hravily focus on quantitative.

Hi Regul8er, first - I would suggest not to be disheartened. GMAT is just a test and can be conquered with some focused attention in preparation.
I would also suggest to perhaps get started by reading this post: everything-you-need-to-prepare-for-the-gmat-revised-77983.html

Then, post on the forum any specific questions that we can help you with. Good luck!

I found a really good discounted on the set of 8 Manhattan Guides. The only problem is they are the 3rd edition, when I notice a 4th has been released.

My funds are extremely low, and I would to purchase the discounted 3rd edition, as long as I won't be losing much in my preparation.

Does anyone know if these shouls suffice? Thanks

Perhaps you can tell us your verbal and quant splits so we can help you come up with a better study guide?

Mahtab has a good suggestion - not all guides are equally good. Also, I think I saw a adv somewhere for all MGMAT Strategy guides under 80 USD (not sure of your budget but I think thats a good deal)

Any chance you can recall where you saw the $80 advertisement. I noticed amazon has it for$100.

Thanks.

I believe I was 25-Q and 17-V.

I think I was 11th percentile overall.

Dude, don't get upset.
You underscored because you probably was stressed thus scored much lower.
I don't know what GMAT CAT you took, but if it was from MBA.com it is more or less accurately represents your score.
Pm me and will give you some indications and share some of my guides.
DONT GIVE UP!

I would also suggest the Manhattan GMAT materials as well. The MGMAT practice CATs are perhaps even tougher than the real GMAT. When you buy them new they give you one year access to their online CATs (they have 6 online practice CATs).

Personally, I bought MGMAT from another GMATClub member and he was able to transfer his account to me, which included the remaining time of his one year online access (like 7-8 months left or something). You can take the test as many times and you want. It was encouraging to see the guy that I bought from score 780's on the tests!

Also, for me, increasing Verbal boosted my overall score more than increasing Quant.

Hope this helps and good luck!
