I am just wondering why the answer is d, why not a ? of course we have to kick out b,c and e because it looks grammatically wrong with "it" .
but why we kicked a ?

8. Lacking information about energy use, people tend to overestimate the amount of energy used by
equipment. such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate that used by
unobtrusive equipment, such as water heaters.
(A) equipment, such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate that
(B) equipment, such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
(C) equipment, such as lights, that is visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
(D) visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate that
(E) visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate it when

Thank you for the question.

Friendly suggestion: It would be helpful to others if you did not put a spoiler in your first sentence.

A is wrong because of two reasons ..

1) Equipment is a singular noun .. it requires a singular verb .. that is and not that are.
2) " equipment, such as lights, that are visible " has redundancy ..

Between A and D, it looks as if it is better parallelism in D that goes in its favor. Read it with the non-underlined part after the underlining.

A. -equipment, such as lights, that are visible - and must be turned on and off and underestimate that used - by
unobtrusive equipment, such as water heaters. -

D) - Visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate that used by
- unobtrusive equipment such as water heaters

Usage -visible equipment and unobtrusive equipment – is more parallel than - equipment, such as lights, that are visible and unobtrusive equipment

This problem is from OG12.

E is incorrect, because you have a parallelism keyword "and", so for the "unobtrusive equipment" develop the sentence:

people tend to overestimate it used by unobtrusive equipment, such as water heaters.

You see the sentence doesn't make sense, so "that" must be used to refer to the "amount of energy" and not "it".

D.

A) verb form: are (x)
B) verb form: are (x)
C) Parallelism: it when (x)
E) Parallelism: it when (x)
