The following appeared in a mayor's welcome notes to the members of a conference:

On behalf of everyone here in Ketner Springs, welcome to our blossoming community. We trust that you will find that Ketner Springs is the ideal place to locate your business, on account of our renowned transportation system and our award-winning parks and recreation department. Families love living here, as our schools have the lowest student-to-teacher ratio in the state and our restaurants boast more kiddie menu options than you can find anywhere in the country. If you need a place to locate your business or open a new office or factory, you'll find the perfect locale here in Ketner Springs.

The aforementioned argument by the mayor that Ketner Springs would be a great place to set up a new office or factor appears to be, at first glance, fairly convincing. However, upon further examination of the argument and it's underlying structure, a number of flaws become evident. Among the most pivotal shortcomings of the argument are its inability to address it's assumptions and lack of information to substantiate its claims.

Firstly, the argument mentions that schools in Ketner Springs have the lowest student to teacher ratio in the state. This does not imply if the quality of education is good. Is the ratio deliberately kept low to improve the quality of education or do the parents enroll their children to schools outside Ketner Springs due to better options available elsewhere? The latter would resulting in a decrease in the number of enrollments in schools? and subsequently, a low student-to-teacher ratio.

Secondly, the argument mentions renowned transportation systems and an award winning parks and recreation department. It fails to mention the need for local transport or the parks. It also fails to mention if Ketner Springs, as a result of the increased parks, has enough space available for businesses or factories. What if there is no space available and Ketner Springs has to cut down parks to make space for newer offices? It would then defeat the reason why the families would move here in the first place. The mayor's speech also mentions about more kiddie menu options in restaurants but fails to mention if they are also healthy to consume.

Additionally, the argument talks about Ketner Springs being tan ideal place to relocate businesses and factories. It does not mention how lucrative or profitable it would be to do so. Since there are so many parks and residential areas, a factory could be potentially harmful for the residents. It is also possible that Ketner Springs had high property rates or tax policies that would adversely impact businesses and would drastically decrease profitability

Thus, the argument, in its current state, contains a number of defects, the most blatant of which are discussed above. Unless the argument is addresses these flaws, its persuasive ability and legitimacy would not be reinforced. Thus, in its current state, the argument appears to be a hasty generalization and a biased opinion instead of a well substantiated fact.
