Hi,
the original sentence hae the problem of 'modifier'..
what should Knowing that the area was prone to earthquakes, modify.. some person, geologist, builder etc..

lets see the choices..
(A) Knowing that the area was prone to earthquakes,
problem of modifier.. buildings cannot be knowing the info, it has to be a person

(B) Having known that the area was prone to earthquakes,
same as A

(C) Since the area was known to be prone to earthquakes,
this choice does away with the requirement of modifier and is grammatically correct...CORRECT

(D) Since they knew that the area was prone to earthquakes,
antecedents of 'they' is not known

(E) Being prone to earthquakes
again problem of modifier, the buildings are not prone but the area is..
also being should be avoide if possible

ans C

(E) Being prone to earthquakes,

in E, the building can be prone logically.
the problem is "being" . why do we need "being"?. this error is popular on gmat SC. we do not need "being" in this case according to gmat standard.
